I’d read claims beforehand of automated waste-bag dispensers, dedicated canine showers, and a fenced agility park with obstacles, and arrived to find something considerably simpler. What’s actually here, at the end of the Semedela promenade near the mouth of the Badaševica river, is a small enclosed dog beach with a concrete wall and a gate, a pergola for shade, and a freshwater tap for rinsing dogs off. That’s genuinely it. I’m not saying that to complain — my dog had a perfectly good afternoon here — but I’d rather describe what’s actually present than repeat an inflated list of facilities that don’t exist.

The enclosure lets dogs run and swim off-leash, which is the real point of the place and the reason it’s worth the trip if you’re travelling with a pet. The water stays calm here, sheltered by the same general layout that protects the rest of this stretch of coast, and the bottom is mixed pebble and silt rather than anything sharp underfoot. I watched a handful of dogs of every size moving freely between the small patch of shade and the water, with their owners chatting on the low wall rather than constantly managing leashes — a genuinely relaxed scene, just a modest one.

I should mention, since I found the naming slightly confusing myself, that there’s a second, larger dog beach further along this coast, part of the wider Žusterna coastal park, where dogs are permitted on a lead rather than off it. The two are sometimes both referred to loosely as Pasja plaža, but they’re distinct places with different rules, and I’d confirm which one you’re actually heading to before setting out, particularly if having your dog off-lead matters to your plans for the day.

Getting There: A Flat 15-Minute Walk From the Old Town

I walked it from central Koper, following the Semedelska cesta promenade southwest as it hugs the water the whole way — flat, easy, and genuinely pleasant with a dog trotting alongside, taking around fifteen minutes at an unhurried pace.

By car, the H6 expressway has a Koper–Semedela exit, after which the road crosses the canal and marina before reaching a paid parking field right behind the river mouth, charged from 8am. By bus, lines 2, 2a, 3, and 4 all stop at Koper Mandrač, a short walk from there to the beach itself. The regional Parenzana cycling path connecting Izola to Koper also runs directly alongside the area, making this an easy stop for anyone covering that route by bike.

What to Actually Bring

Given how modest the facilities genuinely are, I’d pack more than I might for a typical beach day. I brought my own towel for the dog, a separate bowl even though the tap was there, and waste bags rather than counting on a dispenser being stocked. There’s no proper shade beyond the single pergola, so I’d bring a sun shelter of your own if you’re planning to stay more than an hour, and there’s nothing in the way of food or drink directly at the beach — the cafés and kiosks along the wider Semedela path are a short walk back toward town, and most seemed genuinely happy to have a dog at the table once we got there.

The small dog beach at the end of Koper’s Semedela promenade offers exactly three things: a pergola, a freshwater tap, and a fenced, gated enclosure letting dogs swim and run off-leash safely. It’s modest rather than elaborate, and worth knowing that going in rather than expecting the more developed facility some descriptions promise. A second, larger dog beach exists nearby at Žusterna, where dogs are kept on a lead rather than off it — confirm which one suits your plans before heading out. A flat, easy fifteen-minute walk from Koper’s old town, or a short drive via the H6 expressway.
