Big Aselinos Beach Skiathos: Come Before the Boats Arrive
Profile
Big Aselinos Beach (Megalos Aselinos), Skiathos: The Northwestern Shore 13km From Town, Come in the Morning Before the Boat Trips Arrive, Then Walk to Kounistra Monastery
Greece | Aselinos | Skiathos, Northern Sporades
Megalos Aselinos is on the northwestern coast of Skiathos, 13 kilometres from the town, at the foot of Mount Kounistra where pine forests run down to the shore. It is one of the island’s more than 60 beaches, but most of those are in the south and southeast. The north coast of Skiathos is more exposed, less developed, and specifically because of this, included in almost every round-island boat excursion departing from the old harbour. The boats anchor in the early afternoon. The morning is the time to arrive independently.
The beach is coarse golden sand mixed with pebbles, clear turquoise water, and a seabed that drops quickly — deeper than the shallow lagoon character of Koukounaries on the south coast. The quick depth descent means the beach suits confident swimmers rather than toddlers, particularly when the northern winds are blowing and the water has a swell. When the sea is calm, in the morning hours especially, Aselinos is a different proposition: clear, clean, peaceful, and large enough that the partly organised section and the free section both have room.
The partly organised section has wooden sunbeds, straw umbrellas, and a taverna. The rest of the beach is free. When the boat excursions arrive early afternoon, the beach’s character changes — it can become crowded in a way that the morning never is. Come at 9am and leave before 1pm, or wait until late afternoon when the boats have gone.
Getting There: 13km From Skiathos Town, Main Road to Koukounaries Then North, Paved Road to the Monastery, Dirt Track Final Section, Large Parking
From Skiathos Town, follow the main road toward Koukounaries and turn north toward the Kounistra Monastery. The road is paved for most of the route; the final section to the beach is a well-maintained dirt track. Parking is large and shaded. The drive takes approximately 20 to 25 minutes.
The Kounistra Monastery: On the Route, 17th Century, Built Where a Monk Found a Swinging Icon
The Panagia Kounistra Monastery is on the road to Aselinos, 13 kilometres west of Skiathos Town. In 1650, a local ascetic named Symeon found an icon of the Virgin Mary hanging from a pine tree and emitting light. The monastery was built in the 17th century around the site of this discovery — its name deriving from kounistra, meaning the swinging one. The icon itself is now kept in the Church of the Three Bishops in Skiathos Town and brought back to the monastery each year on 21 November for the Feast of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary. The monastery’s frescoes date to 1741 and 1805.
Stopping at the monastery on the way to the beach adds 20 minutes and requires no detour — it is directly on the road.
The North Coast Walking Route: Aselinos to Kounistra to Mikros Aselinos to Kechria — The Most Impressive Trail on the Island
The walking route starting from Big Aselinos, going up to the Kounistra Monastery, then down to Mikros Aselinos Beach, continuing to Alygaries Beach and Kechria Beach, is described consistently as the most impressive trail on Skiathos. The full route takes several hours, passes through pine forests, valleys, and creek sections, with panoramic views of the north coast and the sea throughout.
For a shorter version, the path from Aselinos to Kounistra Monastery and back is approximately one hour return.
Mikros Aselinos: The Quieter Smaller Beach Immediately North
Mikros Aselinos — Small Aselinos — is the next cove north along the coast, smaller and generally quieter than Megalos Aselinos, with its own taverna. On days when the boat excursions make Megalos Aselinos busy, Mikros Aselinos is the specific alternative that doesn’t require driving anywhere.
Big Aselinos Beach (Megalos Aselinos) on Skiathos is the coarse sandy northwestern shore 13 kilometres from town — arrive in the morning before the round-island boat excursions anchor here early afternoon, partly organised with wooden sunbeds and taverna, seabed drops quickly (not ideal for toddlers in swell), the paved road to the Kounistra Monastery passes directly through (stop for the frescoes and the 1650 swinging icon story), the north coast walking route from here to Kechria is the best trail on the island, and Mikros Aselinos the quieter alternative immediately north.
Drive early. Stop at the monastery. Leave before the boats arrive.
