Kolios Beach Skiathos: Sheltered Bay With Swans
Profile
Kolios Beach, Skiathos: The 300m South Coast Family Bay Between Vromolimnos and Platanias, With Swans on the Shore and the Quietest Atmosphere on the Island’s Bus Route
Greece | Kolios | Skiathos, Northern Sporades
Kolios sits in a deep bay on the south coast of Skiathos, sheltered from the wind by wooded headlands on both sides. The bay is between Vromolimnos to the east and Platanias to the west, 8 kilometres from Skiathos Town along the main coastal road. The beach is 300 metres long, sandy, with a gradual entry that does not require water shoes — a specific practical feature that makes it different from the pebble-heavy beaches elsewhere on the island.
The specific detail that distinguishes Kolios from the adjacent beaches is the swans. Swans are sometimes present on the beach and in the shallows — noted as beautiful in most accounts and occasionally aggressive toward small children in a few. If swans are present on your visit, supervise young children closely at the water’s edge.
The bay’s sheltered geometry means the water stays calm even when other parts of the island are rough. The bus from Skiathos Town stops at bus stop 13 or 14 for Kolios — the same service that runs the full south coast route to Koukounaries. The beach is less crowded than Koukounaries and the bus route beaches closer to town, which makes it the preference for visitors who want accessibility without the density.
Agia Paraskevi beach is 0.3 kilometres away — essentially the next bay, also sandy, also sheltered, and slightly more popular. The two are often combined in the same day.
Getting There: 8km From Skiathos Town, Bus Stop 13 or 14, Car With Roadside Parking, Water Taxi to the Jetty
The main Skiathos bus line runs along the south coast to Koukounaries with frequent service throughout summer. Kolios is bus stop 13 or 14. The stop is on the main road; a short paved path leads from the road to the beach.
By car, follow the coastal road south from Skiathos Town for 8 kilometres. Roadside parking and a dedicated parking area are near the beach entrance. By scooter, the same road is the standard south coast route.
Water taxis from the Old Harbour in Skiathos Town take approximately 15 minutes and land at the small wooden jetty in the bay.
The Beach: 300m Sandy, Calm Shallow Water, Sunbeds, Two Tavernas, Minimarket, Camping Site
The sand is fine and golden, the entry gradual, and the water consistently shallow close to shore. Two tavernas serve directly from the beach with the specific Sporadic flavour that characterises the island’s south coast dining — fresh fish, local ingredients, prices lower than Skiathos Town. A minimarket near the beach covers last-minute supplies. A camping site operates in the wooded area behind the beach for visitors who want to sleep near the water.
The water sports centre operates from the bay, offering paddleboarding, kayaks, and pedal boats. The equipment rental is aimed at the calm-water conditions the sheltered bay produces.
The Aegean Festival: June to September, Across the Island
The Aegean Festival runs from June to September across Skiathos — a summer-long programme of music, theatre, and cultural events that includes performances in Skiathos Town and at various island venues. The specific programme changes annually. Visitors staying in Kolios for a week have the festival as the evening alternative to the beach.
Koukounaries: The Famous Beach 4km West, Contrast With Kolios
Koukounaries — the most famous beach on Skiathos, with the pine forest backing the sand and the lagoon — is 4 kilometres west. It is significantly busier than Kolios and the comparison is the specific Skiathos south coast decision: Koukounaries for the famous beach with all facilities and larger crowds, Kolios for the same calm water with less density.
Kolios Beach on Skiathos is the 300-metre sandy south coast bay between Vromolimnos and Platanias — sheltered by wooded headlands, calm shallow water with no water shoes needed, swans occasionally present (beautiful but watch small children), bus stop 13 or 14 from Skiathos Town, water taxi jetty, two tavernas, minimarket, camping site, water sports centre, Agia Paraskevi 0.3km away, quieter than the bus route beaches closer to town and significantly quieter than Koukounaries 4km west.
Take the bus from Skiathos Town. Get off at stop 13. Watch for the swans.
