Ligaries Beach Skiathos: North Shore, Dirt Road, 4WD Needed
Profile
Ligaries Beach, Skiathos: The 400m North Coast Sandy Shore 7km From Town on a Dirt Road That Needs a 4WD or Quad Bike, With a Taverna 150 Metres Back Playing 60s Music
Greece | Ligaries | Skiathos, Northern Sporades
Ligaries is on the north coast of Skiathos, east of Mikros Aselinos and approximately 7 kilometres northwest of Skiathos Town by direct distance, though the road route is longer. The dirt road in is the defining practical fact about the beach — a rough winding track through pine forest, up and down steep hillside, that Lonely Planet describes as requiring a 4WD or quad bike. Standard hire cars can manage it carefully in dry conditions but struggle in wet. Every account of visiting Ligaries includes a description of the drive, which is part of the experience and partly the reason the beach stays quieter than the south coast equivalents.
The beach is 400 metres long — longer than several of the north coast beaches — golden-white sand and pebble, with the pebbles more present at the water’s edge. No water shoes needed; the descent is normal. The water is clear aqua, the Aegean opens in front of it to the north, and when the Meltemi blows the beach gets waves in the way that all north-facing Skiathos shores do. The mornings are calm; the afternoons can be lively.
Taverna Ligaries is 150 metres back from the beach — a traditionally built stone taverna playing 60s music, serving modern cuisine with Greek flavours, with sea views from the terrace. One reviewer mentions being welcomed by a half-Greek boy from Wales who was working there. The taverna is the social infrastructure of the beach; without it, Ligaries would be purely wild.
Getting There: Dirt Road From the Evangelistria Monastery Route, 4WD or Quad Recommended, Parking at the Beach
From Skiathos Town, follow the road toward the Evangelistria Monastery and continue northwest on the dirt track system that leads to the north coast beaches. Ligaries is east of Mikros Aselinos on the same route. The dirt section is rough, winding, and involves steep gradients. A hired quad bike, ATV, or 4WD is the practical approach. Standard rental cars manage in dry summer conditions but take the rough sections slowly.
Parking is available directly behind the beach and rarely fills. The isolation that the access road creates is the specific reason Ligaries stays uncrowded relative to its quality.
By boat, the north coast beach sequence is accessible from Skiathos Town harbour on excursion trips and private boat hire — the scenic approach along the northern cliffs bypasses the road entirely.
The Beach: 400m Sandy and Pebble, Semi-Organised, Essential Facilities Only, No Lifeguard
The beach has sunbeds and umbrellas, toilets, and changing cabins — essential infrastructure maintained by the taverna. No lifeguard is present. The sand is golden-white in the central section; the water’s edge has more pebble. The sea entry is normal and doesn’t require aqua shoes. The water is aqua clear and deepens at a normal pace.
Free sunbed spots have been noted by visitors as available away from the organised section. The wide beach provides room regardless.
Mikros Aselinos and the North Coast Sequence
Mikros Aselinos — the smaller, quieter beach immediately west — is the adjacent cove. Megalos Aselinos (Big Aselinos), covered earlier in this series, is further west. The Ligaries–Mikros Aselinos–Megalos Aselinos sequence forms the eastern part of the north coast beach chain that the dirt road system connects.
Ligaries Beach on Skiathos is the 400-metre north coast sandy shore 7 kilometres northwest of Skiathos Town on a dirt road requiring a 4WD or quad bike — go slowly in a standard car if you must, only in dry conditions — golden-white sand and pebble (no water shoes), sunbeds and essential facilities maintained by the taverna, no lifeguard, mornings calm and afternoons wavy when the Meltemi blows, and Taverna Ligaries 150 metres back playing 60s music with sea views.
Rent the quad. Take the north road. Drive carefully. Arrive for the calm morning sea.
