Klima Beach Milos: The Syrmata Village at the Water's Edge
Profile
Klima Beach, Milos: The Narrow Pebble Shore Below the Syrmata Boathouses, Above the Catacombs and the Hillside Where the Venus de Milo Was Found
Greece | Klima | Milos, Cyclades
The word that appears in every description of Klima is syrmata — the Greek term for the ground-floor boathouse rooms built directly into the waterline where fishermen stored their boats in winter. Klima is a traditional Greek seaside village and a protected settlement with distinctive colourful houses known as syrmata, where the fishermen used to store their boats for the winter, matching their boat’s colour to their syrma.
Its inhabitation goes back to around 1100 BC, when it used to flourish as the harbour of Milos. The Early Christian Catacombs are situated right above it, as well as the Ancient Theatre and the site where the Venus De Milo statue was found, which can nowadays be admired at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
Klima Beach, located in the picturesque village of Klima on the island of Milos, is renowned for its stunning coastal views and unique charm. The beach is characterised by its colourful traditional fishermen’s houses — the syrmata — which line the shoreline, creating a vibrant backdrop.
The beach itself is quite narrow, featuring a mix of sand and rocks. It is not a long swimming beach. It is a beach where the architecture is the attraction — the two-storey syrmata with their colour-matched wooden doors at the water’s edge, the boats still occasionally stored on the lower floors, the upper floors as summer residences — and the water is the secondary element.
Getting There: 4km From Adamas, Follow Signs to Klima Village, No Organised Parking, Narrow Road
Klima is approximately 4 kilometres from Adamas (the main port). The road follows the coast from Adamas then climbs slightly before descending to Klima village level. The road through the village is narrow. There is no organised parking — vehicles are left on the approach road or at the top of the village.
The beach can be reached by following signs towards the village. Once at the beach, visitors can embark on what is considered the most beautiful hike on the island.
The most beautiful hike on Milos from Klima: the path up through the village to the Catacombs and the Ancient Theatre above — a 20-minute uphill walk that arrives at two of the most significant early Christian sites in Greece.
The Beach: Narrow, Pebble and Rock, No Facilities, Photography and Sunsets the Main Draw
Klima Beach is a stunning bathing spot located in the renowned fishing village of Klima on Milos. The colourful fishermen’s houses create a magical backdrop, with the emerald sea and small sandy beach inviting visitors to relax and soak up the sun. While Klima is famous for its vibrant houses, it also boasts a charming albeit small beach with lovely surroundings.
Some mention the narrow beach area with limited space for lounging, but many appreciate the unique vibes and photo opportunities this colourful enclave offers.
The honest visit planning note: Klima beach is not the place for a full beach day of swimming. It is the place for photographs, for watching the sunset over the syrmata, for coffee at the waterside café, and for the 20-minute uphill walk to the Catacombs.
Sunsets: The Specific Time to Visit
Klima is delightful during the day, but its true allure shines as you await the sunset. The colourful houses lining the shore, the crimson-painted sky, and the shimmering Aegean Sea come together to create a picturesque scene. The tranquillity of the area, free from excessive noise, allows you to savour peaceful and relaxing moments.
The western-facing position of Klima is the specific sunset quality — the syrmata colours intensify in the late afternoon light, the boats rock gently in front of the painted doors, and the whole composition is what photographers come for.
The Catacombs and the Venus de Milo Hill
The Early Christian Catacombs are situated right above Klima. Carved into the hillside above the village, the Catacombs of Milos are the oldest and most extensive early Christian burial site in Greece — over 2,000 burials in carved rock chambers, used from the 1st to the 5th centuries AD. The Holy Synod declared Milos a sacred island in 2009 specifically because of them.
The Venus de Milo (Aphrodite of Milos) was found in 1820 in a field on the Trypiti hillside immediately above Klima — the specific site is marked. The statue is now in the Louvre in Paris; the marble it was carved from came from the Milos quarries.
Connecting to the Tsigrado Beach Milos South Coast Programme
Klima village is 4 kilometres from Adamas in the northwest of the island. The south coast beaches — Provatas, Fyriplaka, and Tsigrado Beach Milos Greece — are 8 to 12 kilometres away on the other side. The logical Milos day combines Klima village and the Catacombs in the morning (before the heat builds and the village fills with photographers) and one of the south coast beaches in the afternoon.
Klima Beach on Milos is the narrow pebble shore below the syrmata fishing village — the harbour of Milos since 1100 BC, colourful stacked boathouses with colour-matched wooden doors at the waterline, the Catacombs 20 minutes uphill, the field where the Venus de Milo was found on the hill above, sunsets the specific reason to time your visit, 4 kilometres from Adamas, narrow road and no organised parking.
Come in the late afternoon for the light. Walk up to the Catacombs first. Return for the sunset.
