Klimataria Beach Sithonia: Top-10 in Halkidiki
Profile
Klimataria Beach, Sithonia, Halkidiki: One of Five Little Strands East of Sykia, Covered Almost Entirely in Sunbeds Free With a Drink, With Two Chapels on the Rocks at Each End
Greece | Sykia | Sithonia, Halkidiki, Central Macedonia
Klimataria is one of five little strands that run like a pearl necklace along the shore just east of Sykia. The other four are Linaraki, Pigadaki, Tourkolimnionas, and Tigania — each a small cove separated from the next by granite headlands, each with its own character, and each requiring the same narrow access road that the visitors who find them tend to revisit every summer. Klimataria is considered top-10 in Sithonia.
The bay is well-protected and even on a windy day the water is calm — very safe for families with young children and non-swimmers. This is the specific quality that makes Klimataria different from the open beaches further north on the peninsula. The deep-set geometry of the bay suppresses swell in conditions that would make other beaches uncomfortable. If you stay till late you will enjoy a stunning sunset — unusually for the eastern shore of Sithonia.
There are two small chapels on both ends of the beach, situated on the rocks above the beach. They are small, white, and visible from the water — the specific detail that appears in the photographs of the beach without typically being explained. They mark the rocky headlands on each side of the bay.
Getting There: Road Past Sykia Beach, Turn at Tourkolimnionas, Narrow Road With Panoramic Viewpoint Above
When you reach the large Sykia beach, turn right over the cobblestone road that leads you along the sea past two smaller beaches — Linaraki and Pigadaki, each of which deserves at least one dip. After one kilometre you will see a third beach, Tourkolimnionas where the road ends, and just before it there is a road that branches off to the right and leads uphill to Klimataria beach.
Here you will drive on one of the most exciting roads in Sithonia as you drive high above the sea on a relatively narrow road — drive slowly and carefully. After 1.5km you will be able to see the beach from above. We recommend stopping here and taking a few photos because the view of the bay from this point is truly magnificent. From this viewpoint, continue straight and the road will take you under a viaduct to Klimataria beach.
The viaduct is the “Ghost City” abandoned overpass — an unfinished construction project that was stopped mid-build and left in place, now a landmark on the descent. Parking fills quickly in peak season: arrive at Klimataria early in the morning to secure a spot at beach level and avoid parking on an incline.
The nearest health clinic is 53.4km away. Klimataria is approximately 15km south of Sarti. From Thessaloniki, allow 2 hours.
The Beach: Mostly Covered in Sunbeds, Four Beach Bars, Sunbeds Free With a Drink, No Natural Shade
Klimataria is very organised — practically the whole beach is covered with sunbeds and umbrellas from four beach bars. The beds are normally free with a drink. This is the commercial model throughout the southern Sithonia coves: no upfront sunbed fee, one drink minimum. The consequence is that the beach fills from the organised sections outward, and arriving early is the difference between a sunbed at the water’s edge and one further back.
There is no natural shade. The beach is fully exposed to the sun throughout the day. Sunscreen and a hat are the practical preparations. The sunset, which hits the beach directly given the bay’s orientation, compensates for the midday exposure.
The Viewpoint Stop: Most Overlooked and Most Rewarding Moment of the Drive
The viewpoint above the beach on the descent — where the road briefly passes the elevated section before dropping under the viaduct — is the specific stop that every visitor guide recommends and that most first-time visitors skip in their eagerness to reach the water. The view from above reveals the full geometry of the bay: the deep blue water inside the sheltered cove, the two white chapels on the rocks at each end, the small offshore islets, and the Mount Athos horizon across the water. From the height, you will notice the beautiful colour of the water and wish to descend as soon as possible. Stop anyway.
Tigania and the Pearl Necklace: The Five-Beach Day Programme
Klimataria and the adjacent Tigania Beach Greece — covered separately — together anchor the five-beach sequence east of Sykia. The full pearl necklace from north to south: Linaraki, Pigadaki, Tourkolimnionas, Klimataria, Tigania. The road connects them; a car makes moving between them in a single day manageable. Klimataria for the organised morning, Tigania for the quieter afternoon is the sequence that the local pattern of use supports.
Klimataria Beach on Sithonia, Halkidiki is top-10 on the peninsula — one of five little strands east of Sykia, sheltered bay calm even when the wind blows, practically the whole beach covered with sunbeds free with a drink from four beach bars, no natural shade (bring sunscreen and hat), two white chapels on the rocks at each end, the viewpoint above the beach on the descent worth stopping for, the Ghost City abandoned viaduct the navigation landmark, peak season crowded (arrive early for beach-level parking), and Tigania the adjacent wilder cove 10 minutes north along the same road.
Stop at the viewpoint. Let the colour of the water convince you to descend faster.
