Kalamitsi Beach Sithonia: Three Coves and a Shipwreck Dive
Profile
Kalamitsi Beach, Sithonia, Halkidiki: The Three-Cove Village at the Southern Tip of the Second Finger, With a Rocky Islet 40m Offshore and Halkidiki’s Only Shipwreck Dive East of the Bay
Greece | Kalamitsi | Sithonia, Halkidiki, Central Macedonia
The all-important three beaches of Kalamitsi: all three are about the same size, have the same perfect sand and are ideal for swimming. The best way to describe their differences is like the three colours on a traffic light — green, yellow and red.
Kalamitsi is a small village in Sithonia, built in a semi-circle, protected cove. It lies 25 km south of Sarti and 11 km east of Toroni. The cove hosts three pristine beaches with calm and shallow water, suitable for kids. All three are similar in size with the same perfect soft sand and remarkably emerald, clear waters, but still with different characteristics. The main beach stretches out in front of the village, facing a beautiful rocky islet that is 40–50 metres offshore. It’s worth swimming to the small island and climbing on the top, to enjoy a very nice view. The beach is open to everyone and part of it is well-organised with parasols and sun loungers, provided by beach bars and restaurants. The eastern beach which is more isolated is a nudist paradise. To reach it, you have to walk through a small hill. The third one lies south, right in front of the camping.
What can be more appealing than walking out the door of your beachfront caravan to take a midnight swim as the light of the moon dances on the gentle waves with the mighty Mount Athos as a backdrop.
Mount Athos — the holy mountain on the third Halkidiki finger — is visible from Kalamitsi across the water. The same view available from Tigania Beach Greece and Klimataria Beach Greece further north on the same eastern coast, but at Kalamitsi the mountain is closer and the view more unobstructed because the village is at the peninsula’s southern tip with open water between.
Getting There: 150km From Thessaloniki Airport, 25km South of Sarti, Easy Access off the Main Sithonia Road
Access is easy, just off the main road of Sithonia you turn into town, all roads take you to the beach.
From Thessaloniki Airport, follow the main highway toward Nea Moudania, then take the exit for Sithonia. Drive south through Nikiti and continue toward Sarti. From Sarti, continue south approximately 25 kilometres. The turn into Kalamitsi village is well-signed from the main coastal road. The drive takes approximately 2 hours 15 minutes.
Parking is available in the village and near the main beach entrances. During July and August, arrive before 10:30am for the best spots close to the water.
The Three Beaches: Main (Organised), Nudist (Eastern, Over the Hill), Camping (South, in Front of Thalatta)
The sand is soft, no pebbles here, and the soft sand continues far into the water, making it a great place to play and an option for families. There is plenty of space on the beach and most of it is not organised, so if you prefer to throw down a towel and not pay for a sun bed it is an option.
The main village beach faces the islet and has the restaurants and beach bars immediately behind it. The eastern nudist beach is reached by a short walk over a rocky hill — genuinely more isolated, with no commercial infrastructure. The camping beach to the south is the third cove, immediately in front of the Thalatta Village Camp resort — the dedicated beach for campers and bungalow guests, with its own facilities.
The Rocky Islet: 40m Offshore, Swim to It, Climb for the View, Snorkel Around the Base
The main beach stretches out in front of the village, facing a beautiful rocky islet that is 40–50 metres offshore. It’s worth swimming to the small island and climbing on the top, to enjoy a very nice view.
The snorkelling ground is great. Starting from the south side of the small island, along the shoreline until the Kalamitsi Camping beach the snorkelling ground is great. The underwater topography around the islet — the rock base, the marine life, the sand below — is the snorkelling infrastructure that the beach bar equipment rental supports.
The Shipwreck and 20 Dive Sites: Halkidiki’s Only Wreck Dive, East of the Bay
Experienced divers can also venture east of the beach, where they will find the Kalamitsi Shipwreck. This is a fascinating and uniquely beautiful landmark, the exact origins of which are bathed in mystery.
The 100-year-old Turkish ship wreck is Halkidiki’s only ship wreck dive and a good place for underwater photography. There are also some more challenging dives such as the caves, but don’t miss Kalamitsi’s favourite diving site called Big Rock — few sites in Halkidiki compare and you may even cruise alongside dolphins! With no less than 20 dive sites, Kalamitsi is considered one of Northern Greece’s best diving destinations.
The Camping Culture: Beachfront Caravans, Midnight Swimming, Mount Athos in the Background
Kalamitsi is located almost at the end of the Sithonia peninsula, a small town with some sports and fishing boats in the picturesque natural harbour area. The organised camping scene — Thalatta Village Camp on the southern camping beach, plus other sites in the area — is part of what makes Kalamitsi the specific destination for visitors who want the Halkidiki beach with the option of sleeping outside.
Kalamitsi Beach on Sithonia, Halkidiki is the three-cove village at the southern tip of the second finger — main beach with the rocky islet 40–50 metres offshore (swim to it, climb for the view), eastern nudist beach over the hill, camping beach south in front of Thalatta, Halkidiki’s only shipwreck dive east of the bay plus 19 other dive sites, Mount Athos visible across the water, some of the best lunch restaurants in Sithonia, 150 kilometres from Thessaloniki Airport, and 25 kilometres south of Sarti on the same coastal road.
Drive south from Sarti. Turn into the village. All roads lead to the beach.
