Platis Gialos Kefalonia: Quieter of the Lassi Twins
Profile
Platis Gialos Beach, Kefalonia: The Smaller, Quieter Half of the Lassi Twin Beaches, 3km From Argostoli, With the Vardiani Islands on the Horizon
Greece | Lassi | Kefalonia, Ionian Islands
Platis Gialos means wide shore in Greek — which is the slightly confusing part, because Platis Gialos is much smaller than its neighbour Makris Gialos (which means long shore). The naming refers to the beach’s width relative to length rather than to absolute size, and the beach is correctly described as wide in proportion. It is also much quieter than neighbouring Makris Gialos with crystal clear water, which is the more useful comparison for choosing between the two.
Just 3 kilometres outside of Argostoli, on the way to the airport, in the area of Lassi, are two of the most beautiful sandy beaches of Kefalonia — Makris and Platis Gialos. They are separated by a few rocks and connected enough that going from one beach to the other by either walking or swimming is possible.
The honest crowd context: if you are visiting in high season (July–August), come only if you enjoy the beauty and the services together with a lot of “friends”. The proximity to Argostoli and the airport means both Lassi beaches are the default choice for tourists staying in the capital area, and they fill accordingly.
Getting There: 3km From Argostoli, 5.5km From the Airport, Local Bus to Lassi Then Walk, Free Parking Behind the Beach
Airport to Platis Gialos: 5.5 km. Argostoli to Platis Gialos: 3.5 km. By car, follow the main road through the Lassi tourist area — the beach is signposted and the parking is immediately behind it with no steps to navigate from car to sand.
The island’s bus network runs regular routes from Argostoli‘s main station to Lassi throughout the day. From the bus stop, it is a flat 5-minute walk to the beach.
For visitors staying in the Lassi peninsula hotels, the beach is walkable along the coastal paths that connect the area’s bays. This is the specific convenience that makes Platis Gialos the default morning swim for most Lassi accommodation guests.
The Beach: Sandy, Blue Flag, No Water Sports, Beach Volleyball, €15 Sunbeds, Quieter Than Makris Gialos
There is no possibility for water sports, but beach volleyball fans can play there until night. This is the specific practical distinction: Makris Gialos has the water sports infrastructure; Platis Gialos has the beach volleyball court and the quieter atmosphere. Snorkelling at the rocky margins of the bay is the active water option available.
€15 for 2 loungers and an umbrella — fairly priced. A nice beach bar with changing cubicles and toilets. The beach is lined with pines on the top of the rocks.
At its ends, rocks and rocky walls shelter it from the wind. A fantastic environment full of green hills and lush vegetation — a bit like a small Eden.
The Blue Flag is consistent across both Lassi beaches, awarded annually for water quality and facilities.
The View: Paliki Peninsula, Turkopodaro Beach, and the Vardiani Islands
Right across, you have a view of the vast blue of the Ionian and the Turkopodaro beach, as well as the Paliki peninsula and the Vardianoi Islands, the latter at a greater distance. If you look towards the horizon on a clear day, you might just be able to make out the small uninhabited island of Vardiani.
The Paliki peninsula is the western arm of Kefalonia — the other side of the bay from Lassi. The view west from Platis Gialos captures the full width of the Ionian bay with the land arms on each side and the open sea beyond.
Myrtos and Antisamos: The Dramatic Alternatives
Platis Gialos and Makris Gialos are the organised, convenient, family-friendly beaches of Kefalonia. The island’s most dramatic beaches — Myrtos (the white vertical cliffs and turquoise sea of the northwest, regularly ranked among the best beaches in Greece) and Antisamos (the pebble cove on the east coast used in the filming of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin) — are both over 30 kilometres from Argostoli and require a car. Platis Gialos is what you use when you want the sea without the drive.
Gentilini Winery: Kefalonia’s Wine, 4km From the Beach
The Gentilini Winery — one of Kefalonia’s best-known producers of Robola wine, the island’s indigenous white variety with PDO status — is 4 kilometres from Platis Gialos on the road toward Argostoli. The combination of a Platis Gialos morning swim and a Gentilini tasting in the afternoon is the specific Kefalonia day that the beach’s location enables.
Platis Gialos Beach on Kefalonia is the quieter of the two Lassi twin beaches — Blue Flag, sandy, no water sports (beach volleyball instead), €15 for 2 sunbeds and an umbrella, 3.5 kilometres from Argostoli, 5.5 kilometres from the airport, free parking behind the beach with no steps, the Vardiani Islands on the horizon on a clear day, and Makris Gialos accessible over the rocks a few hundred metres to the north for anyone who wants the water sports and livelier atmosphere.
Drive south from Argostoli through Lassi. The sign is there. The parking is flat.
In July and August, come early.
