Pythagoreio Beach Samos: 4.5km Shore by the Airport
Profile
Pythagoreio Beach (Potokaki), Samos: The Island’s Longest Beach at 4.5km, Blue Flag at the Asterias Beach Bar Section, 5 Minutes from the Airport and 15 from Vathy
Greece | Pythagoreio | Samos, Northeast Aegean Islands
Pythagoreion beach is a Blue Flag beach, mostly with sand and partly pebbles next to Samos Airport. The part of the beach which has the Blue Flag is about 250m at the front of Beach Bar “Asterias” and is at the front of a large resort. The beach is one single beach with Potokaki beach, from which it is separated by a small stream at the end of the airport. The entire length of the beach is 4.5km and is the longest beach on the island.
The correct framing before anything else: “Asteria Beach” is not a separately named beach — it is the name of the most prominent beach bar on the long sandy stretch that runs from Pythagoreio town westward to Potokaki. The Blue Flag designation covers the 250-metre section in front of the Asterias bar. The full beach continues east and west of this section, both organised and unorganised, for 4.5 kilometres in total.
This is Samos‘s longest beach, and also its closest to the airport — Samos International Airport (SMI) is less than a 5-minute drive from the beach, making it the perfect first or last stop of your trip.
Getting There: 5 Minutes From Samos Airport, 15–20 Minutes From Vathy, Public Parking in Pythagoreio
Asteria Beach in Pythagoreio offers a more upscale beach experience compared to other options in Samos. From Samos Town (Vathy), the drive takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
If you are staying in the village of Pythagoreio, Asteria is a mere 5 to 10-minute walk from the main harbour promenade.
The airport proximity is the specific practical detail. Arriving flights at SMI can be beachside within 10 minutes — the fastest airport-to-beach sequence available on Samos. Equally, departing travellers can swim until the last practical moment and reach the airport in 5 minutes.
Public parking is available in Pythagoreio near the village entrance, with smaller lots within walking distance of the beach.
The Asterias Beach Bar: The Island’s Best-Known Beach Club, Front Row €30, Second Row €20, Wood-Fired Pizza
Asterias Beach Bar is a sensational place to unwind during the evening hours, or for passing the time during the day. Dip your toes into the water as you sip on perfectly mixed, invigorating cocktails, try the aromatic shisha, listen to live DJ and live in the moment. Asterias serves a series of delicious, Italian-inspired dishes including fresh, homemade pasta and pizza baked in Napolitan-style wood ovens.
Prices for sunbeds and umbrellas vary, with front-row sets costing more (around €30) than back rows (around €20). Some reviewers mention paying €20 for two sunbeds and an umbrella. A few reviewers noted that the beach charges per umbrella, which may be less convenient for odd-numbered groups. The beach is generally clean, and the water is clear and suitable for swimming. The beach itself consists of sand mixed with gravel and smaller stones, with some suggesting beach shoes for added comfort.
The thing is that the sun beds used to be free until 2015 for Greek people who used to visit almost daily.
The 4.5km Beach: Organised Centre, Unorganised Ends, Sand and Pebble Mix, Turkey Visible Across the Strait
The beach is organised and in other parts, such as the east, but there are also blank sections (not organised), if you are interested in something like this.
The long beach from Pythagoreio to Potokaki covers the full southern approach to the town — calm, south-facing, partly sandy, Turkish mountains visible across the water. The Anatolian coast is approximately 1.2 kilometres away at the nearest point, clearly visible on any day without haze.
Pythagoreio Town: UNESCO Heritage, Tunnel of Eupalinos, Ancient Harbour
Pythagoreio is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — the ancient harbour of Samos (formerly known as Tigani), with its 6th-century BC walls, the Tunnel of Eupalinos (a 1,036-metre aqueduct tunnel hand-carved through a mountain c.550 BC, considered one of the greatest engineering achievements of antiquity), the Tower of Lykourgos Logothetis (the commander who helped liberate Samos from the Ottomans), and the early Christian basilica.
The programme: swim at the beach, eat at Asterias, then walk to the tunnel entrance — 10 minutes from the beach bar.
Connecting the Samos South Coast
Pythagoreio Beach is the western end of the south coast beach sequence. Mykali Beach Samos Greece begins immediately east, extending 3 kilometres further toward Psili Ammos. The full southern Samos beach drive: Pythagoreio (sandy town beach with airport proximity), then Mykali (long pebble cold-current beach), then Psili Ammos (the finest sand beach on the island). All three are reachable from a single Pythagoreio base in one day.
Pythagoreio Beach (Potokaki) on Samos is the island’s longest beach at 4.5 kilometres — Blue Flag at the Asterias beach bar section (front row €30, second row €20, wood-fired pizza, live DJ, open 8am to 10pm), sandy and pebble mix, 5 minutes from Samos Airport, 15 minutes from Vathy, Turkish coast visible across the strait, the Tunnel of Eupalinos 10 minutes’ walk from the bar, unorganised sections east and west.
Land at the airport. Drive 5 minutes. Swim before checking in.
