Mykali Beach, Samos: The 3km Pebble Beach Between Pythagoreio and Psili Ammos, Named After the Mountain on the Turkish Side, Where Cold Strait Currents Keep the Water Clear

Mykali Beach is located in the south-eastern coastline and took its name from the mountain on the opposite side of the coast (nowadays Asia Minor, Turkey). The mountain Mykale — visible from the beach across the narrow water — is the specific geographic feature the beach is named after. The naming was done by people who sat on this shore and looked at what was directly in front of them.

It is one of the longest beaches of Samos (approximately 3 km long) and extends east of “Psili Ammos” beach. The coast is clean and the waters are rather cold, due to the currents flowing in the narrow strait between Samos (Greece) and the opposite Asian Minor coast (Turkey).

The cold water is the honest note that follows the length — its waters are quite cold as there are currents that pass through the strait that separates Samos from the Asia Minor coast (Turkey), which is just one kilometre and two hundred metres away. The same geographical proximity to Turkey that gives Mykali its name is the source of the strait currents that keep the water colder than the sheltered coves on other parts of the island. In midsummer this reads as refreshingly cool; earlier in the season it is genuinely cold.

Getting There: 8km From Vathy, 8km From Pythagoreio, 10km From the Airport, Road Runs Directly Alongside the Beach

Mykali is a long pebble beach located 8km south of Vathy and east of Pythagorio. It stretches for about 3 km with beautiful clear blue waters.

Access is easy and quick, as the beach lies directly along the coastal road connecting Pythagoreio with Psili Ammos. The road runs parallel to the entire beach length — there is no descent required, no dirt road, and no path. This is the specific access convenience that distinguishes Mykali from most Samos beaches: you drive along the coast road, see the beach directly to your left, and park on the roadside or in the informal areas behind the hotels.

Mykali is 10 km from Samos Airport (~15 minutes by car). This makes it a direct airport-to-beach option — the closest organised beach to Samos Airport on the island.

By bus, regular services connect Vathy and Pythagoreio to the area throughout the summer.

The Beach: 3km of White and Grey Pebbles, Organised at the Centre, Wild at Both Ends, Hotels Along Its Length

Mykali is a long beach with large white pebbles and crystal-clear, turquoise waters. Thanks to its length, it offers both organised areas with sunbeds and open spaces for those who prefer a more natural setting.

The beach is organised, mostly at the middle, where the road from the town of Samos and Pythagoreion comes in. The great length of the beach gives you the opportunity to choose whether to sit at the sun beds and umbrellas, by choosing among the many beach bars, or to isolate at the east or west of the beach, to be more natural away from the crowds.

Over the length of the beach are several places with many good hotels and resorts. Mykali is located not far from the Turkish coast. The distance is less than four kilometres.

The 3-kilometre length is the practical freedom. The organised section at the centre has sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars, and tavernas. Both ends of the beach are progressively quieter and wilder. Trees sometimes reach down to the beach at certain sections — the specific natural shade that Mykali offers when the central section fills.

Windsurfing in the Afternoons: The Predictable Strait Breeze

Ideal for windsurfing and water sports due to frequent winds.

The same strait dynamics that produce the cold current in the water produce predictable afternoon breezes from the southeast. The combination of the beach’s length, the consistent afternoon wind, and the flat water (the beach is protected from swell despite the wind) makes Mykali a specific windsurfing resource on the south coast.

Psili Ammos: The Sandy Alternative at the Eastern End

At the eastern end of Mykali, the beach transitions into Psili Ammos — Psili Ammos, not to be confused with Psili Ammos at Limnionas in western Samos, is located in a beautiful bay. In the bay lies the island Vareloudi. At this spot the narrowest strait between Greece and Turkey is located; the distance here is only 1,200 metres.

Psili Ammos is the sandy beach — fine sand rather than pebbles — that continues the southeastern Samos coastline at the 1.2km point. The two beaches together cover the full southeast coast.

Pythagoreio: The Nearest Town, 8km West

Pythagoreio — the UNESCO-listed ancient harbour of Samos (formerly Tigani), with its Roman mosaic floor, the Tunnel of Eupalinos (a 6th-century BC engineering feat), and the working fishing harbour — is 8 kilometres west of Mykali. The beach-and-archaeology combination programme: Mykali in the morning, the Eupalinos Tunnel in the afternoon.
