Possidi Cape Beach: The Shape-Shifting Sandbar of Kassandra
Profile
Possidi Cape Beach (Myti), Kassandra, Halkidiki: The Shape-Shifting Sandbar Where Poseidon Had a Temple, the 1864 Lighthouse Is the Only Building at the Tip, and Dolphins Show Up in the Deep Water Off the Point
Greece | Possidi | Kassandra, Halkidiki, Central Macedonia
The village probably owes its name to Poseidon. Nearby is the headland on the western side of the peninsula which was known in ancient times as Poseidonio, and the whole area belonged to the ancient city of Mendi. You can also explore the ruins of the ancient city of Mendi. Built by the Erythreans, it was a place of worship for centuries due to the temple of Poseidon. Sadly, only a small part of it can be seen near the beach today.
So the cape has been notable since antiquity — not because of its shape-shifting sandbar, which is a natural phenomenon of no particular cultural significance, but because the headland itself was a Poseidon sanctuary that drew worshippers across the ancient Aegean. The lighthouse that stands at the end of the sandbar now is the visible landmark; the temple ruins are the less visible but older one.
Possidi Cape (Faros) beach is actually a sandbar that stretches deep into the sea. It’s a really interesting part of the coast, a miniature sandy peninsula which changes shape depending on the sea current. Vehicles are parked at the beginning of the sandbar, in the vicinity of the camp and the famous lighthouse, and then the journey continues on foot. The beach is not organised — there are neither beach bars nor sunbeds, so it is essential that you bring food, water and umbrellas. At the beginning of the sandbar you’ll feel like you’re in a sandy desert, and as you approach the peak it’ll delight you that the sea is on both sides of the sandbar. It often happens that on the one hand (toward Possidi) it is windy, and on the other (toward Aigeopelagitika) is very calm. The sun sets very late here, so you can enjoy until the late hours.
The two-sided swimming is the specific quality that most visitors describe in reviews as the practical revelation. You walk 15 minutes along the sandbar and find calm water on one side and chop on the other — then pick a side based on the wind. On a Meltemi day, when the organised beach at the village is busy and slightly choppy, the sheltered side of the cape tip is often flat.
Getting There: 93km From Thessaloniki Airport, Drive to Possidi Village, Park at the Lighthouse, Walk to the Tip
Possidi village is located on the west coast of Kassandra, 90km from Thessaloniki airport. It is a fishing village, famous for its picturesque tavernas and on the sandy shore of the peninsula that extends hundreds of meters into the sea. The Dolphin Beach Hotel is just 15 minutes from the Sanctuary of Poseidon and the 150-year-old lighthouse cape.
From Thessaloniki Airport, follow the highway toward Nea Moudania then take the exit for Kassandreia and Fourka, continuing south toward Possidi. The drive takes approximately 1 hour 15 minutes.
Drive toward the Possidi Lighthouse. A large parking area is available near the campsite and hotels at the beginning of the sandbar. From there, it is a 10 to 15-minute walk along the sand to reach the tip.
No shade exists along the sandbar from the lighthouse to the tip. Bring water, food, and your own umbrella before leaving the vehicle.
The Lighthouse: Built 1864 by the French Lighthouse Company, 14 Metres Tall, Opens Once a Year for International Lighthouse Day
At one of the most beautiful beaches of Kassandra, Aegeopelagitika beach at Possidi, you will find a charming old whitewashed lighthouse. This colonial-styled lighthouse built by the French Company of Lighthouses in 1864 is still in use today and has a small flowery garden beside it, adding to its beauty. Once a year, visitors have a unique opportunity to tour inside the historic monument as it opens its doors to the public celebrating the International Lighthouse Day. You need to watch the sun go down behind Mount Olympus! It’s an amazing experience!
The sunset view from the lighthouse with Mount Olympus visible across the Thermaic Gulf to the northwest is the specific late-afternoon reason to be at the cape tip rather than heading back to the village beach.
The Shape-Changing Sandbar: Why the Map May Look Different From One Year to the Next
The tip of the Myti (meaning nose in Greek) points in a different direction depending on the sea currents of the preceding winter. This is why aerial photographs of Possidi Cape taken in different years show the sandbar at different angles. The shape changes but the basic structure remains — a long sandy finger extending into the Thermaic Gulf until the water is on three sides and the village is a 15-minute walk back.
The Organised Village Beach: Beach Bars, Blue Flag, Full Facilities, 1.5km From the Cape
The organised section of Possidi beach is immediately adjacent to the village — beach bars, sunbeds, umbrellas, tavernas, hotels. Stroll along the shoreline and take a journey to the Aegeopelagitika area, awarded the Blue Flag in 2017. The two-part character of Possidi is the practical planning note: the village beach section for organised comfort, the cape for the wild end-of-the-world experience. Both are at the same location; it’s a 15-minute walk between them.
For the Kassandra cape contrast, Golden Beach Paliouri Halkidiki Greece is 25 kilometres south at the tip of the same peninsula — the organised beach among pine trees at Kassandra’s southeastern tip.
Possidi Cape Beach (Myti) in Kassandra, Halkidiki is the shape-shifting sandbar where the ancient Poseidon sanctuary stood — park at the lighthouse (built 1864 by the French Lighthouse Company, opens once a year for International Lighthouse Day, Mount Olympus visible at sunset from the tip), walk 15 minutes to the tip (no shade — bring everything), sea on both sides at the tip (choose the calm side), dolphins in the deep water off the point, the organised Blue Flag village beach 1.5 kilometres back, and 90 kilometres from Thessaloniki Airport.
Park at the lighthouse. Walk to the tip. Choose the calm side.
