Sveti Vlas Beach Bulgaria: Quieter Than Sunny Beach
Profile
Sveti Vlas Beach, Bulgaria: The Blue Flag Cluster at the Foot of the Balkan Mountains, 2km Quieter Than Sunny Beach
Bulgaria | Sveti Vlas | Burgas Province, Black Sea Coast
Sveti Vlas is actually a cluster of three smaller beaches which together total 1,500 metres of fine golden sand.
The distinction from Sunny Beach — 2 kilometres to the south — is the specific character statement that positions Sveti Vlas in the Bulgarian Black Sea resort hierarchy. The entertainment in the area is more upmarket than Sunny Beach, opting for a more family-friendly atmosphere. Unlike the dense development of Sunny Beach, Sveti Vlas is developing in a different way — a settlement by the sea with lots of greenery and open spaces. The construction is in a holiday style, inspired by Bulgarian traditions — no more than 5 floors, white and calm facades facing the sea, a combination of stone and wood with picturesque details.
Sveti Vlas (St. Vlas) is one of the most luxurious spots on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast — nice atmosphere, cozy bars and restaurants, elegant style and all this just a stone’s throw away from the busy Sunny Beach.
The name itself carries history. The town of Sveti Vlas is one of the oldest settlements in the municipality of Nesebar. The settlement was founded in the 2nd century AD by the ancient Thracians. It bore the name Larisa at that time; it took the name of Saint Vlas in the 14th century — the protector of merchants, stockbreeders, and a healer. A monastery existed from the 14th to the 18th century in the name of the saint; it was burned during the countless forays of pirates. In 1963, Vlas was declared a climatic seaside resort.
Getting There: 2km from Sunny Beach, 10km from Nessebar, 33km from Burgas Airport, Regular Minibus Every 15 Minutes
Marina Dinevi is located on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, in the northern part of the Gulf of Nessebar, only 10 km away from Nessebar. The nearest international airport is located 30 km from the Marina, in Sarafovo residential district, near Burgas.
From Sunny Beach, a regular local minibus connects Nessebar, Sunny Beach, and Sveti Vlas — approximately 10 to 20 minutes, with departures every 15 minutes in summer. By taxi from Sunny Beach centre: 10 to 15 Bulgarian lev (approximately €5 to €8) for the 5.9-kilometre journey. By car from Burgas: drive north along the main coastal road for approximately 40 minutes (33 kilometres), following signs for Marina Dinevi.
The Beaches: Three Sections, All Blue Flag, Venid Beach Ranked Among World’s Top 20
Sveti Vlas-new beach, Sveti Vlas-East beach, and the Marina Dinevi yacht port have been awarded Blue Flag certificates. The marvellous Venid Beach, part of Dinevi Resort, was ranked among the world’s top 20 beaches for a classic vacation for 2018 by beach-inspector.com. You can make yourself comfortable here on large rocking beach beds under palm umbrellas while soaking up the sun and listening to the sea waves. Adjacent to Venid Beach is the largest yacht port in Bulgaria — Marina Dinevi, founded in 2007 with a capacity to house 300 yachts and boats.
The three beach sections are the Central Beach (the main organised stretch), the New Beach (the larger northern section adjacent to the marina), and the East Beach. All three carry the Blue Flag certification. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available from approximately €4 to €5 per set — affordable compared to Adriatic or Aegean equivalents.
The gentle seabed slope and the bay’s natural protection from the prevailing northerly winds produce the calm, shallow entry conditions that make Sveti Vlas consistently recommended for families.
Marina Dinevi: The Largest Yacht Port in Bulgaria, 300 Yachts, Opened 2007
Marina Dinevi Yacht Port is a modern yacht centre certified to provide port services since 28 December 2006. The official opening ceremony took place on 16 June 2007. The unique combination of mountain and sea provides the area with a mild climate, fresh air and more than 260 sunny days throughout the year.
Marina Dinevi is one of the emblems of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast and is among the most famous places for the young, curious, adventurous and all who are in love with marine life.
The yacht port is the social anchor of Sveti Vlas and the specific provision that gives it the upmarket character distinguishing it from Sunny Beach. The promenade along the marina — the walk between the restaurants, the boat berths, and the waterfront bars — is the specific evening activity for visitors staying in the resort. The La Cubanita restaurant and other marina-front establishments are the dining options that the waterfront position enables.
The International Sailing Regatta: 18–20 July, Annual
The International Sailing Regatta of St. Vlas is conducted annually on July 18, 19, and 20. It is one of the great sailing expos and competitions on the coast.
The regatta is the specific annual cultural event that the marina infrastructure makes possible — the three-day sailing competition that fills the Marina Dinevi berths with competing vessels and the marina promenade with sailing culture. Visitors coinciding with the regatta dates get the sport alongside the beach.
The Balkan Mountains Backdrop: Climate, Mountain Trails, 260 Sunny Days
Marina Dinevi is built directly below the southern slopes of the Balkan Mountains, naturally protected from the prevailing northern winds.
Sveti Vlas is located at the foot of the southern slopes of Stara Planina, in immediate proximity to the Black Sea coast. The microclimate here is favourable for the treatment of pulmonary diseases. All guests notice the beneficial effects of the climate, especially during longer stays — children breathe easier, improve their appetite and vitality, and are healthier throughout the winter.
The 260 sunny days per year and the mountain-sheltered microclimate position Sveti Vlas as a shoulder-season destination as well as a summer resort. The mountain trails starting immediately above the resort give it the hiking dimension that the flat resort towns further north lack.
Sunny Beach: 2km South, the Other Side of the Character Choice
Sunny Beach — 2 kilometres south of Sveti Vlas — is the largest and loudest resort on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast: hundreds of hotels, extensive nightlife, packed beaches with high-season crowds, the party scene that draws British and northern European package-holiday visitors. If you want to mingle with the Liverpool fans it will take only 5 minutes.
The specific visitor choice: Sunny Beach for the nightlife and party infrastructure, Sveti Vlas for the quieter, marina-focused, family-oriented alternative within a 10-minute bus ride of the same Black Sea water and the Nessebar UNESCO Old Town.
Nessebar: The UNESCO World Heritage Old Town 10km South
Nessebar — 10 kilometres south — is the UNESCO World Heritage site that the Bulgarian Riviera strip revolves around: the ancient Thracian, Greek, Roman, and Byzantine city built on a narrow peninsula joined to the mainland by a single causeway, with 40 churches and basilica ruins visible in the medieval old town. Part of the tourist metropolis Ravda – Nessebar – Sunny Beach – Elenite, uniting the most popular summer holiday destinations in Bulgaria.
Sveti Vlas Beach on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast is the three-section Blue Flag cluster at the foot of the Balkan Mountains — the Venid Beach, New Beach, and East Beach totalling 1,500 metres of fine golden sand, Marina Dinevi with 300 yacht berths as the social and cultural anchor, 2 kilometres quieter than Sunny Beach, 260 sunny days per year, the International Sailing Regatta on 18–20 July, €4–5 sunbeds, minibus every 15 minutes from Sunny Beach, and Nessebar UNESCO 10 kilometres south.
Take the minibus from Sunny Beach. Walk the marina. Stay for the seafood.
