Profile
Agios Romanos Beach: The Serene Turquoise Escape of Tinos
Agios Romanos Beach is a coastal sanctuary that perfectly balances the wild Cycladic spirit with effortless comfort. Located on the southern coast of the island, approximately 12 kilometers from the main port, this beach is a local favorite that has managed to remain an “open secret” among savvy travelers.
Tinos is famous for its marble-carving traditions and its spiritual heart, but its coastline offers a different kind of magic. At Agios Romanos, the rugged Aegean landscape softens into a wide, sandy embrace, offering one of the most protected and peaceful swimming experiences on the island.
The Shore and Water Quality
What truly defines Agios Romanos Beach is its impeccable shore and water quality. Unlike many of the rocky or pebbled coves found in the northern Cyclades, this beach boasts a broad stretch of fine golden sand mixed with very small, smooth pebbles. The shoreline is framed by a lush line of tamarisk trees, which provide a beautiful natural contrast to the deep blue of the horizon.
The water at Agios Romanos is legendary for its crystalline transparency. Because the bay faces south and is nestled within a deep indentation of the coast, it is exceptionally well-protected from the strong northern “Meltemia” winds that can often make other Tinos beaches quite wavy. The sea here is usually as calm as a mirror, shifting in hue from a pale mint green at the edge to a vibrant turquoise further out. The descent into the water is gentle and sandy, making it a premier choice for families with children and those who enjoy long, meditative swims in calm, high-visibility waters.
Facilities and Services
Agios Romanos strikes a sophisticated balance between “untouched” and “organized,” ensuring you have everything you need for a full day of relaxation without the clutter of over-commercialized resorts.
-
Thoughtful Organization: A section of the beach is organized with comfortable sunbeds and umbrellas. These are spaced generously apart, respecting the tranquility of the environment. Most are operated by the local beach bar, allowing you to order a chilled freddo espresso or a signature cocktail directly to your seat.
-
The Beach Bar and Dining: The local beach bar is known for its elegant, minimalist aesthetic and excellent playlists. For a more substantial meal, there are traditional seaside tavernas just a few steps from the sand. These family-run gems serve authentic Tinian cuisine, including local cheeses, sun-dried tomatoes, and fresh-caught seafood.
-
Natural Shade: For those who prefer a more “DIY” approach, the large tamarisk trees at the back of the beach offer plenty of free natural shade. It is common to see visitors laying their towels under the trees for a siesta after a midday swim.
-
Amenities: The beach is equipped with basic facilities such as public showers and changing cabins. The surrounding settlement of Agios Romanos also offers several high-end villas and boutique apartments for those who wish to make this peaceful bay their base for their entire stay.
How to Get to Agios Romanos Beach
Reaching this sandy paradise is a straightforward and scenic journey that showcases the rolling hills and dove-cotes of the Tinian countryside.
-
By Car or Scooter: From Tinos Town (Chora), the drive takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Follow the main road heading northwest toward the village of Kionia, and then follow the well-marked signs for Agios Romanos. The road is fully paved and in excellent condition. There is a spacious, unpaved parking area located just a short, flat walk from the water’s edge.
-
By Bus: During the high season (July and August), the local KTEL bus service often runs routes from the main port to Agios Romanos. However, checking the daily schedule at the station is recommended as times can vary.

By Taxi: Taxis are readily available at the port and offer a quick, fixed-price transfer to the beach.
Agios Romanos Beach is a reminder that the best parts of the Aegean are often found where the wind stops and the sand begins. Its combination of pristine water quality, natural shade, and authentic Tinian hospitality makes it an essential stop for anyone seeking a more refined and peaceful island experience.
