Koukounaries Beach - Chrysi Ammos (Golden Sand)
Profile
Koukounaries Beach: The Pine-Scented Paradise of Skiathos
If there is one beach that defines the emerald allure of the Northern Sporades, it is undoubtedly Koukounaries Beach. Frequently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean—and often cited as the best in Greece—Koukounaries is a sweeping crescent of golden sand that feels like a masterclass in natural design.
Known as “Chrysi Ammos” (Golden Sand) by the locals, the beach is famous for its unique sparkling grains that shimmer like jewels under the Aegean sun. But the true magic lies in its backdrop: a rare, protected forest of Stone Pines (Koukounaries) that gives the beach its name and creates a fragrant, green border between the civilization of the island and the deep blue of the sea.
A Protected Natural Masterpiece
Koukounaries Beach is more than just a place to sunbathe; it is a protected ecological site. The ecosystem here is so unique that it is part of the Natura 2000 network.
-
The Pine Forest and Lagoon: Directly behind the shoreline sits the Strofilia Lagoon. A small river connects the lagoon to the sea, and the area is a sanctuary for migratory birds, including elegant swans and herons. This creates a lush, cool microclimate that is a refreshing departure from the typical dry Mediterranean landscape.
-
The “Sparkling” Sand: The sand at Koukounaries has a high mica content, which causes it to glitter intensely in the light. It is incredibly soft and fine, making it the perfect playground for families and sun-seekers.
-
Crystalline Shallow Waters: The bay is exceptionally well-protected from the northern winds. The water remains calm and shallow for a long distance, making it one of the safest and most enjoyable swimming spots for children on the entire island.
World-Class Amenities and Island Life
Despite its status as a protected nature reserve, Koukounaries Beach is a fully organized destination that caters to every modern comfort.
-
Beachfront Comforts: The beach is dotted with well-spaced sunbeds and umbrellas. You will find several wooden beach kiosks (kantinas) tucked discreetly under the pine trees, serving everything from cold frappés to fresh souvlaki and ice-cold cocktails.
-
Water Sports Hub: For the adventurous traveler, Koukounaries is the island’s premier center for water sports. Whether you want to try your hand at water skiing, paragliding for a bird’s-eye view of the forest, or simply renting a pedal boat to explore the edges of the bay, the facilities here are top-tier.
-
Eco-Conscious Atmosphere: Because of its protected status, the beach is kept in pristine condition. There is a palpable sense of respect for the environment among the visitors and staff alike.
How to Get There: The Heart of Skiathos Transit
Koukounaries is located about 13 km southwest of Skiathos Town, and reaching it is incredibly simple—in fact, the entire island’s transport system is designed around this beach.
-
By Local Bus (Highly Recommended): This is the most popular way to reach the beach. Take the bus from the main port in Skiathos Town and stay on until the very last stop (Stop 26). Buses run approximately every 15 minutes during the summer and drop you off just steps from the sand.
-
By Car or Scooter: The drive from Skiathos Town takes about 20 minutes along the main coastal road. There are several parking areas available near the entrance of the pine forest, though they can fill up quickly during July and August.
-
By Water Taxi: For a truly scenic arrival, you can catch a water taxi from the old port of Skiathos. The boat ride offers spectacular views of the southern coastline and drops you right at the wooden pier of Koukounaries.
Koukounaries Beach is a rare example of a world-famous destination that actually lives up to the hype. It is a place where the scent of pine needles and sea salt creates an intoxicating atmosphere of relaxation. Whether you are walking through the shaded trails of the Strofilia forest or floating in the shimmering golden waters, Koukounaries offers a piece of Greek paradise that stays with you long after the summer ends.
