Ornos Beach Mykonos: Closest Shore With Delos Boats
Profile
Ornos Beach, Mykonos: The Closest Organised Beach to Town, Protected From the Meltemi on Both Sides, and the Departure Point for Delos
Greece | Ornos | Mykonos, Cyclades
Ornos is one of the most beautiful Mykonos beaches, cosily sitting in the laps of Ornos Bay — a sheltered anchorage tucked away from the bustling crowds and the vibrant Mykonos Town nightlife. With calm, crystalline waters and a captivating sandy shore, Ornos Beach is the perfect Mykonos swimming spot for families with children.
Ornos Bay (like Psarou beach) has the advantage of remaining undisturbed from the winds even on extremely windy days. The cliffs and buildings on both sides of the bay create the specific shelter that makes Ornos calm when the Meltemi is making the northern beaches choppy. This is the practical reason families choose Ornos as a base — predictable conditions regardless of wind direction.
Ornos Beach is the closest public beach to Mykonos Town, offering a relaxing and convenient getaway with a sheltered bay and shallow waters. Most of the beach is lined with sunbeds for rental — make reservations early to snag a spot, especially during summer.
The honest context: colonies of expensive hotels cram the beach. Ornos is busy, developed, and popular — the most organised beach on the island by most measures. That is also what makes it functional. The hotel infrastructure, the restaurant density, the water taxi connections, and the Delos ferry are all features of the same developed character.
Getting There: 3.5km From Mykonos Town, KTEL Bus From Fabrika Station, Car 10 Minutes, Water Taxi From Other Beaches
From Mykonos Town (Chora), the drive takes less than 10 minutes. The bus from Fabrika station runs frequently to Ornos throughout the day — the bus stop is a 2-minute walk from the sand.
By water taxi, Ornos is a primary stop on the sea taxi circuit connecting the southern Mykonos beaches — arriving by boat from Platis Gialos, Paraga, or Super Paradise is the beach-hopping approach.
Parking is available near the beach but fills quickly in July and August — arrive before 10:30am or take the bus.
The Beach: Sandy, Calm, Shallow, Sunbeds by Reservation, Public Section Away From the Resorts
The beach is hidden within a sheltered bay, protected from the strong northern winds, and boasts calm waters and fine golden sand. It is a rare place in Mykonos where families with young children, honeymooners, groups of friends, and solo travelers all feel equally at home.
Though if you head away from the resorts, there are small public areas where you can lay out a beach mat. The free section is at the edges of the organised beach club areas — functional for anyone arriving early enough.
Special places to mention by name: Kuzina, Pasaji, and the all-time classic Aperanto Galazio are the three beach clubs most consistently recommended.
The Boat to Delos: Departure Point for the Most Important Archaeological Site in the Aegean
Ornos serves as a popular starting point for boat trips around Mykonos and to the nearby islands of Delos and Rhenia, offering the possibility of combining a day at the beach with a touch of adventure and cultural discovery.
Don’t miss the opportunity to take an excursion to the island of Delos, an archaeological site of immense historical and cultural value that can be reached by boat from Ornos.
Delos is the sacred island where Apollo and Artemis were born according to Greek mythology — the most important religious sanctuary in the ancient Aegean, a free port under Roman rule, and now an uninhabited UNESCO World Heritage site with intact streets, temples, mosaics, and marble lions. Day trips from Ornos take approximately 30 minutes by boat. The site closes at 15:00 — morning departures are essential.
Agios Ioannis and Shirley Valentine: The Nearby Film Location
Agios Ioannis Beach, nearby, was featured in the classic movie Shirley Valentine (1989). The small beach and the taverna used in the film are still there — a specific cultural footnote for visitors arriving at Ornos and walking the short distance around the headland.
The Water Taxi to Super Paradise and Elia
Ornos is the strategic hub for the southern Mykonos beach sequence. The sea taxi connects Ornos to Psarou, Paraga, Super Paradise (the famous gay and naturist party beach), Paradise, and Elia — the full spectrum of Mykonos beach experiences reachable by boat from a family-friendly base.
Ornos Beach on Mykonos is the closest organised beach to town — 3.5 kilometres from Chora, sheltered from the Meltemi on both sides, calm when the rest of the island is not, sunbeds at Kuzina, Pasaji, and Aperanto Galazio (book in advance in summer), public section at the resort edges, boat to Delos from the bay (leave morning, site closes 15:00), water taxis to Super Paradise and Elia, and Agios Ioannis beach nearby for the Shirley Valentine location.
Take the bus from Fabrika. Book the sunbed. Take the morning boat to Delos before the beach.
