Keramoti Beach
Profile
Keramoti Beach: The Golden Sand Tongue of Northern Greece
With its fine, flour-like sand and lush pine forest backdrop, it offers a tropical atmosphere that feels a world away from the mainland hustle. Located in the picturesque town of Keramoti, about 40km from Kavala, this beach is famous for its unique “sand tongue” shape that juts out into the turquoise Aegean.
The Shore and Water Quality
The shore at Keramoti Beach is a vast expanse of soft, golden sand that stretches for several kilometers. The name “Ammoglossa” literally translates to “Sand Tongue,” referring to the way the beach curves into the sea, creating a stunning natural peninsula. The water quality is exceptional, consistently earning the Blue Flag award for cleanliness and environmental management.
The water here is crystal clear and notably calm, thanks to the protection provided by the nearby island of Thassos. One of its most appealing features is the depth—or lack thereof. The sea remains shallow for quite a distance from the shore, making it feel like a massive, natural swimming pool with a sandy bottom that is perfect for wading and relaxing.
Facilities, Services, and Safety
Keramoti is one of the best-organized beaches in the region, offering a wide range of amenities that cater to every type of traveler. Whether you want a full-service experience or a quiet spot under the pines, you will find it here.
-
Organized Beach Bars: Several modern beach bars line the coast, providing comfortable sunbeds and umbrellas. Usually, these are available for a small fee or the price of a refreshment.
-
Showers and Changing Rooms: You will find well-maintained freshwater showers and changing cabins conveniently located near the main access points.
-
Lifeguard Services: During the summer high season, professional lifeguards are on duty to ensure the safety of all swimmers.
-
Accessibility: The beach is designed to be inclusive, with wooden ramps and facilities that assist people with mobility challenges.
-
Sports and Activities: While motorized water sports are kept at a distance to maintain peace, you will find plenty of beach volleyball courts and space for rackets (palaikia).
Is it Children-Suitable?
Keramoti Beach is arguably the most children-suitable beach in Northern Greece. The combination of very shallow water, fine sand without stones, and the absence of strong waves creates a safe environment where parents can relax while children play.
The proximity of the pine forest also provides a natural “cooling” effect and extra shade for midday breaks. Many of the beach bars even include small playground areas or dedicated space for kids to build sandcastles, making it a top-tier choice for families with toddlers and young children.
Tavernas and Beach Bars
Food lovers are in for a treat, as Keramoti is a renowned fishing village. Along the harbor and just a short walk from the beach, you will find numerous traditional fish tavernas serving the catch of the day. The local mussels and fresh sardines are legendary in this region.
For a more casual vibe, the beach bars offer everything from iced frappes and signature cocktails to club sandwiches and salads. As the sun sets, some of these bars transform into atmospheric lounges where you can enjoy the sea breeze with a drink in hand.
