Marikes Beach: The Hidden Archaeological Sanctuary of Eastern Attica
Marikes Beach (Paralia Marikes) is a reminder that some of the best travel experiences are hidden in plain sight. Located on the eastern coast of Attica, just south of the bustling port of Rafina and near the settlement of Perdika, this beach offers a refreshing contrast to the hyper-commercialized shores of the southern suburbs. Known to locals as a “hidden sanctuary,” Marikes is famous not just for its crystalline waters, but for its proximity to the prehistoric settlement of Askitario, which keeps watch over the bay from the rugged cliffs above.
While many travelers rush to the ferry terminals of Rafina to catch a boat to the Cyclades, those “in the know” take a detour to Marikes. It is a place where the scent of sea salt mingles with the surrounding Mediterranean scrub, offering a sophisticated and tranquil environment for those who want to escape the city’s frantic pace without leaving the mainland.
The Shore and Water Quality
- The most captivating feature of Marikes Beach is its versatile and natural shoreline. Unlike the artificial pebble beds found in some urban areas, Marikes is a beautiful composition of soft golden sand and fine shingle, providing a comfortable and organic texture underfoot. Because the bay is naturally protected by the rocky Akrotiri (Cape) of Askitario to the south, it is shielded from heavy southern swells, ensuring the sea remains calm and inviting throughout most of the summer.
- The water quality at Marikes is consistently excellent, often outperforming the more crowded beaches of the Saronic Gulf. The Aegean currents keep the water refreshed and remarkably clear. The sea here boasts a striking palette of emerald and deep turquoise, maintaining its transparency even as the depth increases. The seabed is primarily sandy with intriguing rock formations near the edges of the cove, making it a prime location for snorkeling. Underwater explorers will find a vibrant marine ecosystem and high-definition visibility that rivals the remote Greek islands.
Facilities, Services, and Safety
Marikes Beach strikes an elegant balance between a “wild” escape and an organized destination. It provides the essential facilities and services needed for a professional and comfortable day by the sea without the noise of a high-decibel beach club.
-
Thoughtful Organization: Unlike the packed rows of umbrellas in Vouliagmeni, Marikes offers a more laid-back level of organization. You will find several clusters of sunbeds and umbrellas, but a large portion of the beach remains “free.” This allows visitors to bring their own gear and find a private corner under the natural shade of the local tamarisk trees.
-
Modern Amenities: The beach is equipped with essential showers and changing cabins, allowing you to rinse off the salt and transition seamlessly to a nearby seaside taverna. These facilities are maintained with a high standard of hygiene, ensuring a comfortable experience for families and solo travelers alike.
-
Lifeguard Supervision: Safety is a priority at Marikes. During the peak summer season (June through September), a certified lifeguard is stationed on the beach. Their presence, combined with the generally shallow and placid nature of the bay, makes it an exceptionally safe environment for swimmers of all skill levels.
-
Historical Exploration: Just a few steps from the sand, you can hike up the small trail to the prehistoric site of Askitario. It adds a unique “service” to your beach day—the chance to walk through 5,000 years of history between swims.
How to Get to Marikes Beach
Reaching this eastern haven is a straightforward journey, whether you are coming from Athens or the nearby port.
-
By Car: From central Athens, the drive takes approximately 45 to 55 minutes via the Attiki Odos or Marathonos Avenue toward Rafina. Follow the signs for “Marikes” or “Askitario.” There is a dedicated parking area at the end of the road near the beach entrance, though arriving early on weekends is recommended as it can fill up by noon.
-
By Public Transport: You can take the KTEL Attikis bus from the Mavromateon station (Pedion tou Areos) to the port of Rafina. From the port, Marikes is a short taxi ride (roughly 5 minutes) or a pleasant 20-minute walk along the coastal path.
