Central Beach Lozenets: Bulgaria's Creative Black Sea Shore
Profile
Central Beach Lozenets, Bulgaria: The 1km Shore Founded by Romantics From a Landlocked Village, Now Bulgaria’s Creative Coast With National Surf Championships and an Outdoor Cinema
Bulgaria | Lozenets | Tsarevo Municipality, Burgas Province
The village was founded in 1924 by people from the nearby inland village of Velika, who came here because of the waves, seagulls, and the sea breeze. The village was first named Emberli after a popular grape variety, and later renamed Lozenets — meaning “vineyard place” — because of the numerous vine massifs nearby.
The creative community arrived next. The citizens of the capital city Sofia were the first to come to the resort. Many artists like the famous Bulgarian jazz singer Beloslava bought villas there, in order to be inspired by the calmness and the romance of Lozenets. The artists’ invasion was then followed by the owners of the Sofia clubs. Beach bars and clubs like Alcohol and By the Way opened on the beach of Lozenets. They became a stage for many Bulgarian and foreign musicians. Some of the best freestyle skiers and snowboarders founded surf schools there.
Lozenets is one of Bulgaria’s most charming and stylish seaside villages, known for its golden beaches, relaxed vibe, boutique hotels, and cosy seaside bars. It is a favourite among families, couples, and younger travellers looking for a more refined Black Sea experience.
The village is 70 kilometres south of Burgas and 60 kilometres from Burgas Airport.
Getting There: Bus From Burgas South Bus Station, Car E87 South Past Sozopol, Paid Parking at the Beach, Car Rental Strongly Recommended
During the summer season, there is a regular bus service between Burgas and Lozenets. From Burgas Airport, take public bus line 15 to Bus Station South in Burgas. From the same station, buses run to Lozenets.
If you plan to explore the area, renting a car is recommended, as organised tours are rare and public buses connect only the coastal villages and towns.
The drive south from Burgas on the E87 past Sozopol and Primorsko takes approximately 1 hour. Paid parking is at the beach entrance; spaces are limited in July and August.
The Beach: 1km Long, Volcanic Rocks at Each End, Mineral-Rich Water, National Surf Championship, Outdoor Cinema
The main beach stretches for about a kilometre, with fine sand and scenic volcanic rocks at each end. It’s great for water activities, sunbathing, or just enjoying the view. There’s also a nudist section for those who prefer a more liberating experience. One end is equipped with volleyball courts and water sports facilities, including a windsurfing and kitesurfing school. The other end has calmer waters, making it safe for children.
The seawater at Lozenets is described consistently as among the cleanest on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The seawater contains microelements like magnesium, calcium, iodine, and bromine, which are highly regarded by wellness specialists globally. Lozenets features the cleanest sea water along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.
The resort holds a national championship in surfing and an annual photo fiesta. The surf championship is the specific annual event that confirms the surf culture’s institutional status in Lozenets — not just a beach culture, but a competitive one.
The UP Outdoor Cinema operates every night from 21:30 and 23:00, with 30 seats and a drinks buffet. The summer cinema is the specific cultural provision that distinguishes Lozenets’ evenings from the standard beach resort programme.
The Beach Bars: Gypsy Bar, By the Way, Summer Mood, Zig Zag, Vanilla Bay
The beach bars of Lozenets are where the village’s creative identity is most visible. Summer Mood accommodates over 200 people, with parking. Zig Zag is on the beach after Summer Mood. Vanilla Bay follows Zig Zag. By the Way is on D. Kondolov street. These bars have something that distinguishes them from other clubs: nice atmosphere, refined swing music, chill-out and jazz touches. At night they turn into wild nightlife arenas with Bulgarian and foreign DJs.
The Gypsy Bar is the specific bohemian anchor — colourful textiles, eclectic furnishings, vegan smoothies, cocktails, a décor that signals the creative demographic rather than the package holiday one.
The Other Beaches: Tarfa (Music Venue), Babeshki (Nudist), Coral, Oasis, Bear Hole, Small
Lozenets has multiple beaches: Central (main, 1km), Coral, Oasis (the resort beach, covered separately), Bear Hole, Small, and Babeshki (Grandmotherly, between Central and Small, rocky terrain preferred by nudists). Tarfa Beach is the smaller beach located in a small bay that is part of a bar on the rocks — a music venue where popular artists and DJs perform almost every night.
Begliktash: The Prehistoric Rock Sanctuary 14km Away
Begliktash — the prehistoric rock sanctuary discovered in the early 2000s, in use from the 14th century BC to the 5th century AD — is 14 kilometres from Lozenets in the Ropotamo reserve. Archaeologists believe this was a Thracian site for ritual purposes. The rock formations arranged in specific astronomical orientations are the Balkans’ equivalent of Stonehenge.
Strandzha Nature Park and the Ropotamo River
Strandzha Nature Park begins immediately west of Lozenets. Boat trips along the Ropotamo River in the Ropotamo Reserve offer a peaceful journey through calm waters and lush forests — the specific natural activity that the beach base enables.
Central Beach Lozenets in Bulgaria is the 1-kilometre creative coast founded in 1924 by romantics from inland — jazz singers, artists, and Sofia club owners establishing the beach bar culture that distinguished it from the resort strips to the north, volcanic rocks at both ends, mineral-rich sea water, the national surf championship, the UP Outdoor Cinema with 30 seats, the Gypsy Bar and By the Way on the beach, Tarfa music venue beach at the small bay, Begliktash prehistoric rock sanctuary 14 kilometres away, and Oasis Resort Beach 1.3 kilometres south for the gated luxury alternative.
Drive south from Burgas past Sozopol. The village is at the Strandzha foothills.
The outdoor cinema shows at 21:30 and 23:00.
