Sarafovo Beach Burgas: 20-Min Walk From the Airport
Profile
Central Beach Sarafovo, Bulgaria: The 4km Shallow Family Beach 20 Minutes on Foot From Burgas Airport’s Terminal, With Dark Iron-Sand Patches and a Bike Lane From the City
Bulgaria | Sarafovo | Burgas Municipality, Burgas Province
Burgas Airport is just a 20-minute walk from Sarafovo’s sandy beach, and around 10 kilometres from the Burgas city centre.
The 20-minute walk from the terminal to the beach is the specific travel detail that makes Sarafovo the only beach on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast — and one of the few in the whole Black Sea — directly accessible from an international airport on foot. Visitors with late afternoon flights, or arrivals who want to begin the beach holiday before checking in to a resort further north, can achieve both in a single seamless movement.
Sarafovo Beach is roughly 4 km of shallow water, ideal for kids. Dark sand patches show iron and manganese — an easy conversation starter while you relax.
The dark sand patches are the same therapeutic iron and manganese content found at Pomorie (covered separately) — the Burgas Bay coastal geology produces dark-mineral sand across a stretch of the southern shore. The dark patches at Sarafovo are less consistent than the fully dark-sand beaches of Pomorie but are visible and specific to the area.
Getting There: Bus No. 15 Every 20 Minutes From the Terminal, 10-Minute Drive From Burgas City, Bike Lane 10km From Sea Garden
Bus No. 15 runs about every 20 minutes from the roundabout toward the South Bus Station. Tickets cost roughly 1.50 BGN and are paid on the bus.
Bus No. 15 is the specific connection between Burgas Airport, Sarafovo beach, and Burgas South Bus Station — the same bus that connects all three in a single route. For visitors arriving by air, the bus from the terminal to the beach runs directly to the Sarafovo area.
Getting to Sarafovo is easy, whether you hop on a city bus or cruise in by car. If you’re in the mood for a more scenic journey, there’s also a dedicated bike lane that traces the coast all the way from Burgas’ Northern Beach, passing through the photogenic salt pans along the way.
The 10-kilometre dedicated coastal bike path from Burgas Sea Garden to Sarafovo passes the Atanasovsko Lake salt pans and the flamingo habitat. The flamingos at Atanasovsko Lake are visible from the bike path, making the ride an ornithological experience as well as a transport option. The bike-sharing system (Burgas Bikes) is available from the city with over 120 bicycles at nine stations.
Paid parking is available near the beach. The drive from central Burgas takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
The Beach: 4km, Shallow Gentle Entry, Dark Sand Patches, Quiet Residential Character, Water Sports
Sarafovo boasts fine golden sand and relatively shallow waters, making it very suitable for families with young children. The beach is well-maintained and provides various facilities, including sunbeds, umbrellas, and beach bars. You can also find opportunities for Burgas waterfront activities like jet-skiing or paddleboarding during the summer.
Sarafovo is known for its small, steady waves and reliable winds — ideal conditions that make it a hotspot for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and even paragliding.
The wind character is the specific sports quality: the same Burgas Bay thermal that produces the windsurfing conditions at Sarafovo is what makes the beach busy with kite and wind equipment in the afternoon while remaining calm enough in the morning for family swimming.
Sarafovo Beach combines practical convenience with undeniable charm. Its close proximity to Burgas Airport makes it a favourite for travelers flying in, and its reputation for excellent water sports gives it year-round appeal.
The sunbed and umbrella pricing: expect to pay around 10–15 BGN for a set in 2026.
The Atanasovsko Lake Salt Pans: Flamingos and Therapeutic Mud on the Bike Route
A short coastal detour gives you a calm natural escape where wading birds, shallow pans, and salt flats sit close to the city edge. This is one of the best places for flamingo sightings and quiet shoreline walks. Expect subtle pink and reddish hues that shift with season and light.
Walk or bike along the shoreline toward Sarafovo — there is no direct bus to the saltworks area. Entry to the saltworks section is 2 BGN via a coin turnstile, open 08:00–20:00. Bring coins, water, sunscreen, sandals, and a small pair of binoculars for birds. Wear older swimwear if you try the mud; minerals can stain fabric.
The Atanasovsko Lake — the salt lake between Burgas and Sarafovo — is a Ramsar-listed wetland with flamingos, the Via Pontica bird migration route passing overhead, and free open-air mud bathing available on the southern section (the northern section is a protected nature reserve). The bike route from Burgas Sea Garden to Sarafovo passes the lake’s full length.
The “Beverly Hills of Burgas”: Sarafovo’s Residential Character
Sarafovo is appreciated for its convenient location near Burgas Airport and its appealing residential complexes offering sea views.
The “Beverly Hills of Burgas” nickname used locally reflects the higher-end residential development that has characterised Sarafovo in the 2000s and 2010s — the sea-view apartment complexes and guesthouses that attract both permanent residents and holiday rental visitors. The beach serves a residential community rather than a resort strip, which produces the specific quiet-yet-amenitised character.
Burgas Sea Garden and Central Beach: The City Beach 10km South
The Burgas Sea Garden — the coastal park running along Burgas’ city beach, with the pier, playgrounds, open-air restaurants, and the Sand Sculptures Festival in summer — is 10 kilometres south of Sarafovo by the bike lane or by bus. The city’s central beach (2km long) and northern beach (1.7km) are the busier, more event-oriented city beaches. Sarafovo is the residential alternative with airport access.
Central Beach Sarafovo in Bulgaria is the 4-kilometre shallow sandy beach 10 kilometres north of Burgas city — 20 minutes on foot from Burgas Airport terminal, Bus No. 15 every 20 minutes, the dedicated coastal bike lane from Burgas Sea Garden passing the Atanasovsko Lake flamingos and mud baths, dark iron-manganese sand patches, windsurfing and kitesurfing in the afternoon thermals, 10–15 BGN sunbeds, quiet residential character rather than resort energy.
Walk from the airport. Rent a bike from the city. The flamingos are on the salt lake on the way.
