Mucobega Beach Saranda: Family Bay North of the Port
Profile
Mucobega Beach, Sarandë: The Family-Run Private Bay 2.5km North of the Ferry Port, with Free Sunbeds and Brazilian Macaws
Albania | Sarandë | Albanian Riviera
Mucobega Hotel is a family-run property, 15 minutes’ walk from Sarandë port, having turned its private bay into a small paradise. The hotel has two properties — Mucobega (the original) and Mucobega 2 — both on the same stretch of coast north of the Sarandë city centre, both on the same private pebble bay.
The quality of the water is the consistent note across the review record. The water here was so clear and blue — like you’ve never seen. We visited many beaches, this was the most beautiful in Saranda.
Guests loved the private beach, the pool, the lovely cats and Brazilian macaws, the restaurant with very good food and decoration.
The hotel has faced recurring issues with credit card payments, with some guests being asked to pay in cash despite card logos being displayed, or experiencing problems with the payment system. Beach towels are not included and may require a fee or guests bringing their own. The property occasionally hosts events or parties which can result in significant noise levels for rooms directly above the event areas. The presence of a caged monkey has prompted concern regarding the welfare of the animal from some guests.
The credit card warning is the specific practical preparation that the Trivago guest summary flags — consistent enough across accounts to treat as a real risk. Bring adequate cash.
Getting There: 2.5km from Sarandë Ferry Port, 25 Minutes on Foot from the Embankment, Free Parking
Mucobega Hotel is on Rruga Idriz Alidhima, 2.5 km from Sarandë Ferry Port. Free private parking is provided on site.
From Sarandë city centre, the walk north along the coast takes approximately 25 minutes. The route passes the ferry terminal and continues along Rruga Idriz Alidhima northward — the address is in Lagja 4 (Baba Rexhepi), the residential district north of the port. The free private parking is the specific practical advantage over the central Sarandë beach area, where parking is challenging.
By taxi from the Sarandë promenade or port, the fare is approximately €5 to €8 and the journey takes 5 to 8 minutes. The hotel can arrange airport transfers from Corfu Airport (the nearest airport, 30 minutes by ferry then taxi) or from Tirana airport.
The Beach: Private Pebble Bay, Free Sunbeds for Hotel Guests, Beach Bar, Fire at Night
The beach is small but very clean. The view from the balcony was amazing, looking down onto the hotel’s private beach. Sunbeds are free for hotel residents to use. The beach bar has a nice relaxing atmosphere. I loved the fire on the beach at night where we had cocktails and pizza.
The private pebble bay is the core asset — the specific quality that separates Mucobega from the open public beaches of central Sarandë. The bay is protected, free of the boat traffic that the main city promenade generates, and maintained by the hotel rather than the municipality. The free sunbeds for hotel residents (as opposed to the €10 to €20 day-visitor charges at the organised beach clubs) are the specific financial advantage that makes staying at the hotel, rather than using it as a day-beach venue, the better value proposition.
The water entry is over pebbles — water shoes are recommended throughout, including at the waterline. The bay’s sheltered position keeps the water calm in most conditions. The visibility — “like you’ve never seen” in one guest’s account — is the result of the rocky pebble base (no sand suspension), the absence of heavy boat traffic, and the position at the northern end of the Sarandë bay where the water circulation is better than at the centre.
The evening fire on the beach is the social provision that the hotel specifically mentions — the beach bar serving cocktails and pizza by firelight, an informal evening gathering for guests that several accounts describe as the best version of the hotel’s character.
The Restaurant and the Macaws
The hotel arranges various day trips and excursions, including the ancient ruins of Butrinti and the natural spring of Syri Kaltër (Blue Eye). A jet ski and speed boat are available for hire.
The restaurant serves very good food with a good decoration. The lovely cats and Brazilian macaws are part of the property.
The Brazilian macaws — large, brightly coloured parrots — are noted in multiple guest accounts as an unusual and memorable detail of the property. They are a feature of the garden area between the hotel and the beach. The ethics of keeping them captive are noted in the welfare-concerned review, but their presence as a visual detail of the Mucobega setting is consistent across accounts.
The restaurant serves Albanian cuisine and Mediterranean dishes, with the seafood and the fresh local ingredients specifically praised. The beach bar operates from morning through evening and transitions to the fire-and-cocktails evening programme.
The Sandy Beach Option: Mucobega’s Pebbles Were Cleared
One specific note from the Sarandë beach guides: Mucobega Beach is sandy after having the pebbles cleared. This applies to a section of the beach rather than the full bay, and the sandy section is the result of management intervention rather than the natural geology. The pebble character at the waterline and in the water remains; the sandy cleared section is the upper beach area.
The Two Mucobega Hotels: One Building, Two Properties, Same Bay
The Mucobega family has expanded the original hotel into two adjacent properties — Mucobega Hotel (the original property) and Mucobega Hotel 2 (the newer, larger building with elevator and seasonal pool). Both share access to the same private bay. Mucobega Hotel 2 features 26 rooms, a seasonal outdoor swimming pool, and is approximately 25 minutes on foot from Saranda Embankment. Guests of Mucobega Hotel (without elevator) have access to the pool at Mucobega Hotel 2.
The family-run character is the consistent positive across all the review records for both buildings — the same accounts that note the operational issues (credit card payment problems, noise from events, beach towels not included) also consistently praise the staff warmth and the sense of personal hospitality that the family operation produces.
Mucobega in the Sarandë Beach Sequence
Mucobega is north of the main Saranda Beach Albania city promenade section and in the opposite direction from Mango Beach Saranda Albania (which is south of the city). The specific positioning — private bay, north of the ferry port, quieter than the central city beach — is the quality that accounts describe as making it feel like an island resort while remaining close to shopping and attractions.
Best hotel in Saranda to stay, away from all the busy tourist strips. Feels like an island resort but close to all the shopping and attractions.
Mucobega Beach in Sarandë is the family-run private pebble bay 2.5 kilometres north of the ferry port — free sunbeds for hotel guests, clear water consistently described as the best in Sarandë, the evening fire on the beach with cocktails and pizza, Brazilian macaws in the garden, a caged monkey whose welfare has been raised in reviews, bring cash because the card reader is unreliable, beach towels not included, and Butrint and the Blue Eye arranged as day trips by the hotel.
Book a room rather than arriving as a day visitor.
The fire on the beach in the evening is worth the stay.
