Profile
Kourvoulia Beach (actually a series of three small coves) on the island of Ithaca is a highly-rated, “natural paradise” known for its pristine beauty and refreshing waters.
Atmosphere & Vibe
- Tranquil & Secluded: Reviewers often describe Kourvoulia as a “hidden paradise.” Even though it is located right off the coastal road between Frikes and Kioni, the coves feel intimate and private.
- Three Distinct Coves: There are actually three “Kourvoulia” beaches (First, Second, and Third). The first is the smallest and best hidden, the second is the most popular with a younger crowd, and the third is the largest with expansive views.
- Natural Shade: A standout feature for many is the lush greenery and trees that grow close to the water, providing excellent natural shade, particularly in the afternoons.
Water & Shore Quality
- Crystal Clear & Cool: The water is famous for its striking turquoise color and absolute clarity. Many reviewers note that the water here is exceptionally cold and refreshing compared to other parts of the island.
- Pebbly Terrain: The shore is covered in smooth white pebbles. While picturesque, the seabed is also stony, and many visitors recommend wearing water shoes for comfort.
- Excellent Snorkeling: Due to the rocky edges and clear water, it is a favorite spot for snorkeling.
Facilities & Services
- Unorganized (Natural): This is a “virgin” beach with no commercial facilities. There are no sunbeds, umbrellas, toilets, or cafes on the sand.
- Access: It is very easy to reach. Stairs lead down from the main road directly to the coves.
- Parking: There is limited parking along the side of the road or in small openings at the top of the stairs. It can fill up quickly during the peak month of August.
- Proximity to Dining: While there is no food on the beach, the charming villages of Frikes and Kioni are just a short drive away, offering plenty of traditional tavernas.
Family Friendliness
- Great for Supervised Play: The beach is generally family-friendly. The second cove, in particular, attracts many families.
- Shallow Shelf: Some reviewers mention a few meters of shallow shelf that is great for toddlers to paddle in before the water drops off and becomes deeper.
- Top Tip: Because the beach is unorganized, visitors strongly advise bringing your own water and snacks. If you prefer a quieter experience, head to the “First Kourvoulia” (the one closest to Frikes), which is the most secluded.
