Tsapi Beach Koroni: Remote Bay, Two Tavernas, Schiza
Profile
Tsapi Beach, Koroni: The 100-Metre Sandy Bay 7km Down a Winding Paved Road From the Chrysokellaria Junction, With Two Family Tavernas, a 45-Person Campsite, Four Houses, a Small Church, and the Island of Schiza Directly Opposite
Greece | Tsapi | Pylos-Nestor Municipality, Messenia, Peloponnese
The junction for Tsapi is at Chrysokellaria — the site of the abandoned Monastery of Chrysokellaria on the main Koroni–Vasilitsi–Methoni road. A sign points left. From there, 7 kilometres of winding, fully paved but extremely narrow single-track road descend through olive groves to the bay. The road was a dirt track for many years and was paved relatively recently — the pavement is why the beach can now be reached by a standard car, though drivers approaching from the Finikounda direction should note that the road branches off at an acute angle and olive trees grow close to the asphalt. Before the final descent, the road reaches a pass at 405 metres above sea level, from which Finikounda bay, Methoni, and the offshore islands of Schiza and Sapienza (the Messenian Oinousses) are visible simultaneously.
Tsapi is a small bay: approximately 100 metres of fine-grained sand that runs gently into the sea. Around the bay are four private houses, a small church, a campsite accommodating 45 people, and two family-run tavernas. That is the complete inventory of the settlement. The description from a German camping guide is the most accurate overall characterisation: “at the end of the world.” The two tavernas are both family-run and have been compared to each other in the same breath by visiting campers — the “two Marias” nickname for the pair reflects the affectionate familiarity of a beach that receives its visitors repeatedly.
The island of Schiza is directly opposite the beach — the largest of the Messenian Oinousses island group, uninhabited, visible from the sand throughout the day as the sea light changes around it.
Getting There: Sign at the Chrysokellaria Junction on the Koroni-Vasilitsi-Methoni Road, 7km Paved Single-Track, Approach From Finikounda Direction Recommended, Bring All Supplies
From Koroni (20km total), take the road northwest toward Vasilitsi and Methoni. After 7km, pass through Vasilitsi village. Continue to the Chrysokellaria junction (the abandoned monastery is to the right). Turn left at the Tsapi sign. The 7km descent is narrow and winding — not suitable for large campervans or caravans. Approaching from the Finikounda direction is recommended for motorhomes as the road junction angle is more manageable.
Bring everything: water, food, and supplies. The nearest settlement with shops is approximately 45 minutes away. There are no shops at Tsapi. The two tavernas are the only food source, and their opening hours are seasonal.
The Beach: 100m Fine Sand, Gentle Entry, Crystal Clear, Schiza Visible, Campsite 45 Places, Families and Weekend Greeks, Near Empty on Weekdays
The sand is fine-grained and runs gently into clear water — the entry is gradual and accessible for children and non-swimmers. The water is crystal clear. On summer weekends, Greek visitors from the surrounding region fill the campsite and the taverna tables. On weekdays, the beach is largely empty — the specific solitude that the distance and the road filter preserve.
The rocky edges of the bay offer the snorkelling that the source article describes — the same limestone coastal geology that the entire southwestern Peloponnese coast produces.
The Two Tavernas: Family-Run, Fresh Fish, Freshly Cooked, Spotless
The two family tavernas are the social and gastronomic centre of Tsapi. Both have been described consistently as spotless, with fresh food cooked to order. One visitor described the lunch as “fabulous” and the preparation as traditional Greek cooking by the family matriarch. Prices are reasonable. The service is what a two-taverna bay with no competition produces: attentive to regulars, welcoming to newcomers, unhurried.
The View From the Pass: Finikounda Bay, Methoni, Schiza, Sapienza, All at Once
Before the descent to the bay, the road at 405 metres delivers the specific panorama that rewards the drive: Finikounda bay east, Methoni to the west, and the Messenian Oinousses — Schiza, Sapienza with its 1885 lighthouse, and Agia Mariani — offshore. It is one of the few viewpoints on the southwestern Peloponnese coast from which the full geography of the Messinian peninsula tip and its offshore islands is visible in a single frame.
Tsapi in the Koroni Beach Sequence
The series has covered the full Koroni beach sequence: Zagka Beach Koroni Greece (the 2km golden shore below the Eye of Venice castle, the active convent with the orange orchard) and Peroulia Beach Koroni Greece (the cliff elevator beach 8km north at Vounaria). Tsapi is on the opposite, western side of the Koroni peninsula — accessible via the Methoni road rather than the coastal road north.
Tsapi Beach near Koroni in Messenia is the 100-metre sandy bay 7km down the paved single-track road from the Chrysokellaria junction on the Koroni–Methoni road — two family tavernas (spotless, fresh food cooked to order), campsite 45 places, four private houses, a small church, the Schiza island directly opposite, Finikounda and Methoni and the offshore islands visible from the 405-metre pass on the way down, fine sand running gently into clear water, weekday solitude, weekend Greek camping crowd, bring all supplies (no shops for 45 minutes).
Turn at Chrysokellaria. Drive 7km. Buy supplies before you leave the main road.
