Gidaki Beach Ithaca: 10th in Ionian, Boat Only
Profile
Gidaki Beach, Ithaca: Ranked 10th Among 601 Ionian Beaches, Accessible Only by Boat (€15 Return, 15 Minutes From Vathy) or the 30–40 Minute Steep Hike From Skinos — Cruise Ships Stop Here
Greece | Gidaki Bay | Ithaca (Ithaki), Ionian Islands
Many consider Gidaki to be the most beautiful beach of Ithaca and one of the most beautiful in Greece. The striking blue-green waters, the snow-white pebbles and the untouched, wild, natural landscape, impress every visitor. Gidaki beach ranks 10th among 601 beaches of the Ionian Islands region — a specific ranking that puts it in objective context rather than superlative description. It is on a short list of beaches that independent ranking systems, travel guides, and visitor accounts consistently agree on. The agreement is unusual enough to be meaningful.
The beach is 500 metres long — longer than the enclosed coves that surround it, which is part of the scale that makes the arrival by boat impressive. As you stand, flanked by an avalanche of green that touches the white-pebbled beach, you may have to pinch yourself. The white cliffs topped with vegetation that surround the bay create an enclosure — the specific visual combination of white rock, green pine, and turquoise water that produces the photographs that make the beach identifiable on first sight.
There is no road to Gidaki. Access is by water taxi from Vathy harbour or by the hiking trail from Skinos Beach Ithaca Greece. The hike is 30 to 40 minutes and steep at the end — genuinely achievable for active adults and rewarding for the views along the route, but the path is not easy and most visitors choose the boat. The beach can get busy due to cruise ships stopping by for swimming — this is the specific seasonal caveat. Cruise ships from the Ionian circuit include Gidaki as a tender destination in peak season. On those days the beach fills. On other days it does not.
Getting There: €15 Return Water Taxi From Vathy (11am–3pm, 15 Minutes) or 30–40 Min Steep Hike From Skinos
Pick up a water taxi in Vathy for €15 both ways, once a day, from 11am to 3pm. The boat takes 15 minutes and passes the Church of Agios Andreas on the coastal cliffs, the Skinos bay, and the fossilised sedimentary coastline immediately before Gidaki — a geological formation visible from the water that the sea kayak guides specifically highlight. The boat provides the first view of the beach from the water, which is the approach that delivers the full scale of the white cliffs and the bay in one sightline.
Sunbeds and umbrellas can be rented for €12. The small kiosk/café is open in peak season and closed by September. Bring your own supplies if visiting late in the season.
The hiking alternative starts at Skinos beach — park at Mnimata and walk 10 minutes to Skinos, then continue on the footpath from the right side of the Skinos beach for 30 to 40 minutes to Gidaki. The trail takes around 40 minutes and offers great scenery. Good shoes, water, and sun protection make the hike more comfortable. The path is steep in its final section. The option of hiking one direction and taking the boat the other is the approach that most trail-capable visitors use.
Ithaca has no airport — ferry from Kefalonia or Lefkada is the standard arrival. From Vathy harbour, the water taxi departs for Gidaki from approximately 11am.
The Beach: 500m White Pebbles, White Cliffs With Green Vegetation, Snack Kiosk, Sunbeds €12, Cruise Ships in Peak Season
The beach is 500 metres long — generous by the standard of Ithaca‘s enclosed coves. The pebbles are white and smooth. The depth increases from the shoreline at a slight pace — one detailed visitor review notes “the depth rises slightly, aqua shoes aren’t needed,” while another recommends water shoes. The honest answer is that water shoes are comfortable but not essential.
The snack kiosk provides coffee, drinks, and snacks — not a full taverna. The organised sunbed area covers part of the beach. The free area is the remainder.
Visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon provides the best experience — the beach feels quieter, and the sun is less intense. During peak season, more boats arrive, making it livelier. The cruise ship schedule is the specific variable: on days when a large ship is tendering to Gidaki, the beach is busy. On other days it is as quiet as any access-restricted beach in the Ionian.
The Kayak Approach: The Ithaca Coastline Fully Visible From the Water
The recommended kayak route from Vathy is magnificent and suitable for beginners. During the summer months, especially in the morning, the sea is calm making kayaking a pleasure. Along the 12.5 km route the paddler can enjoy a wide variety of coastline and more than 20 large and small beaches. Along a single route, the visitors can swim in some of the best beaches of Ithaca like Gidaki, Filiatro and Sarakiniko and many smaller, inaccessible beaches. Visiting the Lazaretto islet in the middle of the port of Vathy is also possible along the route.
The Odyssey Sea Kayak Club in Ithaca runs guided day trips covering the full east coast including Gidaki — the specific organised activity for visitors who want to explore the inaccessible sections of the coastline systematically.
The Fossilised Sedimentary Coastline Before Gidaki: The Geological Detail
The kayak guides from Ithaca specifically mention “the fossilised sedimentary coastline before Gidaki beach” as a point of interest on the east coast route. This is the geological formation of compressed ancient seabed material that creates the distinctive rock textures visible just before the beach. It is a specific feature of this part of the Ionian coastline that is visible from boats and kayaks and only noted in guides specifically covering the water approach.
The Hike From Skinos: What the Path Is Actually Like
The path starts at the right side of Skinos beach — from the parking area at Mnimata and the 10-minute walk to Skinos, the Gidaki path is another 30 to 40 minutes. There is an adventurous hiking trail that locals only use and it is considered very tiring as a result most of the tourists favour the boat service. The path has shade from the pine trees for most of its length. The final descent to Gidaki is steep and on loose rock.
The reverse hike — Gidaki to Skinos then boat from Skinos by prior arrangement or back to Vathy — is not standard but possible in principle.
Gidaki Beach on Ithaca ranks 10th among 601 Ionian Islands beaches — 500 metres of white pebbles under white cliffs with green vegetation, the most beautiful beach on Ithaca by consistent consensus, accessible by €15 water taxi from Vathy harbour (11am–3pm, 15 minutes) or by the 30–40 minute steep hike from Skinos Beach Ithaca Greece, snack kiosk and sunbeds €12 in peak season (both may be closed in late summer — bring supplies), cruise ships stop here (arrive early or late afternoon to avoid their schedules), sea kayak the full coastline from Vathy with the Odyssey Sea Kayak Club, the fossilised sedimentary cliff before the beach visible from the water.
Take the 11am boat from Vathy. Arrive before the cruise ship tender. Take the hike back.
